Title: Do I sell my Omega!
Post by: Impact Pete on 15 November 2011, 18:00:55
Well the tax disc notification was on the floor waiting for me when I came home tonight another £15 a year, makes me think twice if I can really afford to keep her.

Mot coming up in Jan and knowing there is a few little jobs adding up I'm wondering wether to sell or not?

What do people think they are really worth now?

And how will I tow my caravan next year!

Dilema.  :(

Depends on year/condition/spec, but most of them arent worth a hell of a lot these days. ;)

You have to weigh up what a replacement vehicle will cost.

For me, that means my old Silver Bullet makes immense sense to keep.  The calculations will come out different for everyone.

The biggest issue wil be replacing the omega with another half decent motor.

That tows a caravan as good as an omega!

Had the same dilemma - ended up buying an XJ Jaguar!

.....is it possible to buy another car that will toe, and doesn't need the same money spent on it, for;
£15,
the cost of an Mot,
the cost of the jobs needed.

I'd guess not...?

I do agree totally but I drive my van most of the time and as we are not visiting family this Christmas or towing a caravan for at least 5 months I suppose I'm thinking of all the cash I would save.

Bad points of getting rid would be: despite it's little issues I love it!

The other option is to take it off the road over winter but when we did that with an old landrover once, it cost us more to get it back on the road than it did to keep it going over the winter, it was garaged and everything was done to keep it as best as possible but the chassis exhaust etc just seemed to rot twice as fast.

sell the caravan
park the caravan on a site
if you only use the caravan a couple of times a year buy a tent
buy a smaller caravan

then you can buy a small car.

this is an interesting one, especialy with fuel being stupidly high and the prediction of further rises. The omega is worth about £0.64 on the trader simply because of this!

HOWEVER, if youre pulling a caravan you could replace it with the kia rio which was voted the ''caravan car of the year'' by some caravan club. but then you'd have to kill yourself..because you're driving a kia.

and say you did buy the suicide inducing kia, yes youll pay less in fuel but to recoup the cost from purchase price vs petrol will take an eternity. and youd still be driving a kia.

my advice. stick with the omega. and be kind to her. clean her, keep her well serviced and she'll lok after you man.

innit :)

Burn the caravan over the winter to keep warm and the money you'll save on your gas bill will pay the extra £15 to keep the Omega!!  :)

i have been giving a lot of thought to buying a smaller...cheaper car for the last 6 months...i  love my old omega....she is reliable....very clean and tidy...and i have added a few bits and pieces to her..just passed the m.o.t for another year....ok fuel is going up and up and it hurts, but when i added up the cost of buying a new car that i do not know the history of and take a chance on it being reliable as my omega,i know that i would get another 10 m.p.g.out of the new one,but it would grieve me to part with the omega for crap money for such a lot of car  and then for the extra m.p.g.and new  car it will take me 5 years to get my money back.....so i am sticking to my old girl who is comfortable....reliable...( famous last words ) and such a loverly looking old girl...i will continue to look after her as i know that she is faithfull to me...amen.. :'( :y

I would agree all regarding cost of replacing, I think I'd had a bad day yesterday everyone wanting money!

I want to keep it, I know I have quite a few jobs on it and they all need doing by Jan, I think when it gets colder you always put off having to strip brakes down etc!

Two things that are behond my skills are the back passenger door has a real ingress of rust on the arch and some nice person reversed into it a few weeks ago and left a large dent in front bumper corner and then drove off without leaving any details >:(

Other jobs;

Steering pump has gone I think only works over 1000 revs.
Front bush is creaking
Brake pipes all had an advisory on them last mot
2 tyres at about 2- 2.5mm
gear box needs 2/3 solenoid replacing (still)
Front Brakes shudder under heavy braking so I'm guessing new discs.
Lots of other niggles but they don't really matter!

Need some free time and a few favours to get it sorted!

I'd be surprised if this ever happened any more, it would have been common courtesy at one time  :(

Such a shame really, these must be one of the most under rated cars on the road. The up side here is if somewhere wants to buy one they are an absolute bargain. I have recently purchased a 2003 3.2 Elite one owner 68,000 history just about every bell and whistle you can think of and smashing condition, the cost for the above £1700 and some would say that was to much. My previous cars where Merc C320 (52) BMW 330CI (52) Jag XJR (51). Whilst I am not saying the Omega is a better car (although the ride is better than the Merc or BMW in my opinion) in terms of purchase price what you get for your money and running costs it leaves the others for dead for that class of car.

The best of it was I sold the XJR and only bought the Omega as a stop gap whilst I searched for a 535 or 540 5 series BMW. But having now owned it I'm not selling it and the BMW idea has gone out the window.

I had this dilema only last week, Sell Omega, buy another car, considered Land Rover Freelander, found out that in my price range they are c*ap, thought of a couple of others, a F*rd or a smaller Vx. Came to the conclusion, buy another Omega, so it guzzles petrol and the tax is high but you travel in style!. Plus, this is by FAR the most helpful forum,( read People),I have Ever had the pleasure to frequent :D, including Classic/Custom/VW etc. No contest, not yet ;)
I felt sad at not having an Omega in my life after nearly 8 years and Mrs Swerve was very upset!
