Makesure its registered before 2001 or the new road tax will whollop you, thats if you dont want a newer one, then again i think the DTI has not changed much in tax cost.

Diesels hold there money better than petrol especially estates that does sound too much money for a '96 plate though

Thats due to the VED, you should not let that bother you if you want a newer one and you can afford the VED..........GET WHAT YOU WANT AND NOT WHAT THE rather GOVERMENT SAY YOU SHOULD HAVE..at the end of the day its what you can afford so if its gonna hit your pocket too much then go as Martin says.

It does depend somewhat on how heavy your right foot is. I've seen as much as 32 mpg from mine at motorway speeds 75/80 mph. I've also seen it get as low as 16.8 when my wife used it for work for a week. She has 2 throttle positions ... up & down! I've also seen 16.6 mpg when i had a c...... on the back! ;D
From the various time this topic has been discussed, there doesn't seem to be much difference between any of the V6's

There are loads of info threads on here as to what is good and what is better.  Also, lots of peeps who think theirs is better than anyone elses....    ::)

Ultimately, the Elite spec is the one with the most toys, the MV6 is arguably the best handling, with assorted CD/CDX etc others with various toys and bells and whistles....  You choose your spec dependant on what you are looking for.

Enginewise, the 2.0 are the most flat, with the 3.0/3.2 giving the better power/torque.  The 2.5/2.6 can argue power versus torque/economy, with the 2.2 a close second.

The 2.5 TD is an old detuned BMW engine and relatively flat.  The 2.2 is a tad better.

The cars weigh in at close to two tonne, irrespectuive of saloon or estate, so unless you have a tame nuclear reactor to fit, they will not give the best economy known to man....

At the end of the day, get a car with the trim you want and within the budget you want to pay.  Let the engine take care of itself....

Theres always LPG if you want to stay petrol, by the way!!   ;D

My early 3lt v6 auto estate is doign 23.4mpg on a daily 30mile round trip. thats on open a road and is never sat still. It does have to cope with a few hills but I dont drive mad. Price wise... 300 quid few months back for an elite. Im guessing there will be many for sale soon with the price of fuel going mad..... off to buy a prius  :-X
