Not sure if the 'stat has gone or not. Temp gauge doesn't reach 80 even on a run.
I have felt the top hose from cold and it heats up suddenly which suggests the 'stat is opening normally.
Could the 'stat still be faulty?
Is it possible that the sender is giving a low reading and is there any way of checking it?

Could be sender or the gauge.
Do the fans come on in traffic? Does the gauge rise to mid-point in traffic?
Given your location, if you want the gauge tested, see Marks DTM ;)

Sounds like mine. There is a theory that the stats seem to have a "partially failed" state where they seem to open close correctly but the car doesn't get to the correct running temp :-\ :-\
As stated, get it checked properly first though ;)

Ran the engine on the drive today. Fans cut in at around 92 on the gauge and switched off again at about 85.
This is suggesting to me that the 'stat has failed or, as theorised by LazySlapper, partially failed.
Could anyone confirm my diagnosis please. :)

On our 2.0 I put a Halfords one on a couple or three years back, and it seemed to 'switch' from being fine one day, to being fine, but at a few degrees lower gauge temperature the next, and never recovered.
Once I'd got hold of a cheap genuine replacement, I swapped out the Halfords one and found this:

Note the crossed-over turn of the 'closure' spring. I can't help wondering if this is why it started behaving differently.
This is how it should look:

That crossed turn would have affected the force needed to start opening itself, and so the equilibrium temperature, I guess????
