£89 for the new WiFi only one, £129 i think for 3G, meaning you can download books out and about.

Can connect to Kindle store via it on WiFi at home and just download & buy books.

I won a Kindle, gave it to motherT, she really likes it. Reads like paper unlike backlit devices like iPad/iPhone so its much easier on the eyes and has a battery life of weeks.

Got one for my daughter and they are very good, indeed. You can have a WiFi or 3G version. I got a WiFi which means that it connects to Amazon via the BT Home Hub and you can then download books whenever you want (once you have set up an account). The 3G version means you can download anywhere if you frequently travel. Books vary in price according to age (obviously new titles are more expensive) and overall popularity. My daughter's books (Jaqueline Wilson titles) have all worked out at around £5 or less.

Well worth it!  :y

Forgot to mention that you can download the first chapter or two of a book to try before you buy. Also, I would also recommend paying extra for the version with the keyboard. The £89 version does not have a keyboard. You will need to type to search for books, set up account/preferences etc.

Remember that they are NOT touch screen.

Hope this helps. :y

My lads school use them instead of some books.

If you do alot of reading, i'd say they are well worth it  :y

ah. she doesnt need it for travel, well except our annual holiday, so downloading books on the move wont be needed. so i take it she can set up an account and download books to it via our laptop?

Just got the Wife one. Thinks its great. The Kindle does have a keyboard as such, but it appears on screen via a button.
My reason for getting the £89 version rather than the 3g version costing £149, was that the man in PC World told me that the 3g required a subscription after 12 months ;)
As a member of BT Fon, I assume I can connect outside the home using a Fon spot if required. My good lady is not into computers, so just having me download a book for her to read will keep her more than happy, so Kindle was for her :y

I can certainly recommend it as it's easy to use and very easy to read.  I've had the WIFI version (with keyboard) for several months now.

The process of downloading titles is painless, as are the prices, and there is a good range from which to choose.

I have also used it to OOF on the odd occasion - although it's not particularly intuitive in this regard.

Ive got one, would hate to go back to 'normal' books.

Light and easy to read, text size and spacing to suit, never issues with badly printed text.

Excellent bits of kit.

For the last 6 months I have been working away from home. so I have spent a lot of time on the Tube, DLR, Eastcoast mainline and plenty of time in hotel rooms. My missus bought me mine six months ago, I have to say it is the best present I have ever had :y :y An endless supply of books. Download of one book takes less than one minute over wifi, prices are about half the price of a paperback. Plus the battery lasts about one month, and mine is used everyday for a couple of hours.
The real bonus is annoying other commuters on the tube who are unable to read there newspapers due to lack of room, you can read the kindle anywhere :) :) An interesting statistic: Kindle readers tend to read 30% faster than if they were reading a book! Only another 50 years and I should have caught up with my reading list  ;D ;D

Mrs TB has one, she loves it. I don't really do story books, so less useful to me.

The cheaper ones dont have keyboards, meaning typing anything in (wifi keys, searching for books etc) is a royal PITA

Just got one for my 50th-I think the better half has this (vain ;D) hope that it would reduce the number of books in the house! TBH, when I'd spoken to people about them before I did have reservations in as much that I'm a bit of a ludite and I felt I would miss the physical aspects of reading a book and had concerns that the screen wouldnt be easy to read in certain lights. Well, I have to say that many of my reservations have been blown away. Ive got the dearer WIFI/3G version and its dead easy to use (probably too easy to search and download more books via the whispernet/oneclick system than is good for my bank account  ;D) and is a really good bit of kit with none of the problems Ive heard about with other e-books like the sony one. The battery life is excellent although that is shortened if you utilize the reading light option but that too is a well designed thing and it wont disturb your other half as putting on the bedside lamp would should you want to read a bit later in bed!TBH, for a book I'd really want to have and keep Id buy a book proper as -good as the kindle is-its a bit like the difference in owning a vinyl album as opposed to a CD: the latter seems a bit sort of "disposable". Only suggestion I would make is that you had a good definition colour front and back cover on the screen but guess thats a minor gripe. Dont know that Id necessarily take one abroad as Id rather lose a couple of books at £5 each than my kindle at a lot more but thats me just being stupid ::)All in all I'd really recommend it :y

Hmmm...

It all depends on what books you want to read. Only one of my Xmas "get" list is available.
Airey Neave - Nuremberg = not available. Not even P Routledge's biog published 2002
Conot - Justice at Nuremberg = n/a
Eric Shipton - That Untravelled world = n/a
Chandler et al - Portable Platonov = n/a
D Tutu - Future/forgiveness = n/a
Dershowitz - best defence = £11.92   or <£5 on Abe

It would be disappointing to be drawn in by a shiny shiny toy only to find it could not yet deliver the content. Potential purchasers should check that the books they want are available now.

Kevin .. due to site rules I cannot give too much information ... but all the books you list are available in electronic format....  somewhere ... :)

Non-kindle books can be converted to work on a kindle very simply.

:)

I wouldn't be without mine now, or the library of 9,000 books I still have yet to read ..... :)

The great thing with the Kindle is the screen - PCs, phones, tablets etc just cannot match it in sunlight or dull conditions. It truely is like a printed page.

Mrs TB was quite happy reading hers by the pool in Cyprus (in a waterproof case, as I kept bombing her ::))

Cold to hold (metal case), screen is pants, the buttons are clunky, using it to get books on and off looks to be a pain.

Then, on top of that, its Fony, so:
You'll be locked into some proprietry, dated, insecure, disfunctional setup, probably leaving rootkits all over your PC.
It will break.
It won't work properly.
It will make you mad.
You will end up educating it with a hammer.

I've read all the comments, and I think I may have a KINDLE coming via Santa. I do read a lot with books from the library, or from charity shops which are returned once read.

Can we have a quick poll a good buy or a waste of money ( for reading, and dowloading at home)

Mrs TB loves hers, wouldn't be without it now.

I don't use it, as only books I read are Spot Jumps over the Gate etc books, and its not ideal for that.

Amazon's wholesale T&Cs forbid any discounting of Kindle (which is why they are all the same price everywhere), so its all about freebies.

Mrs TB's I bought from Amazon direct, despite I could have go it via topcashback on Tesco Direct, as I've heard good things about their aftersales on Kindles. Glad I did, as we've had to use aftersales after breaking it ::)

Utter 'dangle berries'. Of all the tripe you have ever come out with Rusty, that takes the biscuit.

Nothing comes even remotely close to the Kindle for how it performs. Nothing.

The crappy Sony immitation is heavy, cold, uncomfortable, poor battery life, and has a piss poor screen. And tied to their shitty software.

As to repair costs, again you talk 'dangle berries'. Yup, I've broken a screen. Didn't take kindly to my 14.5st sat on it with an aeroplane seatbelt between my arse and it. Amazon said maximum cost would be £79, no matter what the fault. As it happened, they repaired it for free.

Sony spares? They simply haven't sold enough of them for many to appear on egay.  Additionally, remember that the internet extends far beyond egay, believe it or not ;)

Why do you think it will break again?  Trust me, your beloved Sony shit won't last my arse pressing down on a small metal buckle, pressing against a screen.

Given Sony's previous experience with reliability on anything electrical in the last 10-12yrs, I suspect it will just stop working anyway.

That said, if its out of warranty, and I do sit on it with a buckle between my arse and the screen, and a screen is cheaper than Amazon's repair costs (£79), I'll happily replace it ;)

Now, I bet it it was Sony, they wouldn't have repaired it for free (I'm still waiting for a working repair on my crappy Sony telly, only been 9yrs ::))

Cheers Bob  :y That seems to be the favourite place to get one then at the mo  :)

Tho....just checking on Argos website.....to get a £10 voucher you have to spend over £100.....over £50 for a £5 voucher  :-\ So is it an 'in-store' offer only  :-\
I know you are a topcashbacker, what about other retailers, such as those that sound like a tasty, spice meal.digital and Hayle's Comet etc...

Do you mean Curry's  ;D

I'll have a look, ta  :y
