Big hammer. If that doesn't work, bigger hammer.
In all seriousness, is the AV still running and up to date? Running the latest updates from Windows Update? If yes to those, try a malware scanner such as Ad-Aware

Probably about due a rebuild then....

Have you tried a system retore? I had similar probs after downloading a McAfee update -- took several attempts even to get restore to start up --- got there in the end tho !
Acedemic at the mo cos the power supply went pop ( actually BANG!) this afternoon -- relegated to using the lappie til I get a new one tomorrow !

My own view is if its XP, and it hasn't been rebuilt in last 6 months, its due a rebuild anyway ;D

A backup of data, then hopefully the manufacturer gave you some kind of restore mechanism. Else its an XP CD, and a fist load of drivers....

start the PC in safe mode, this will only load the basic drivers, uninstall the progs from there. then simply reboot. this is your easiest option.

Thanks...sounds fun!!,i downloaded virgin media's PC Guard to see if that would find anything,it found some things with the spyware scan,deleted those,had to uninstall it again though as couldn't get onto IE :o,cured the initial problem though,can now get into Add Or Remove Programs

*WARNING* - you can completely screw up your PC if you remove vital services, but, if you are confident of what you are doing, you can;
START > RUN... > MSCONFIG
Click the "Startup" tab and look at the processes set to load at startup. Google the name of each one to learn about what it does and if you can reliably identify any malware / spyware etc, you can uncheck it to stop it from running at startup.
Be careful though, if you don't know what you're doing, you can kill your PC...! Sort of.
I used it to disable the WinXPDisableZeroConfiguration utility amongst other things as it was eating my CPU on the lapdog. Also unused Yahoo, BT software etc.
Be wary though, don't play with it as you may cause yourself more grief than good!!
Hope it helps some of you :)

ADD/REMOVE programmes doesn't always show all programmes on the PC, best removed from Windows Explorer if you can find them.. run a disc clean up and a defrag then try again..
I'm having problems removing an old piece of software to put on an updated version.. can't do it :'( :'( :'(
