... is there such a thing anymore? the car market is right down, house prices all over the place... etc ... so where is the gap in the market these days?
** sorry if this turns out to be a pointless post ** these little things get me interested :-) **

If I had time to work it out exactly I would say there is a gap in the market for a Small Jobs Clearing System. Basically it would be approved by Local Authority and registered jobseekers/ others would offer their labour/skills and those wanting jobs done would put their needs on line.
There would be no tax if the work was done through the scheme so it would not affect benefits etc and you would get paid an agreed rate of say £10 per hour or whatever the consensus was.
As said it needs a lot more work but there are loads of jobs that need doing by those with no time or elderly and for those who need jobs doing and cannot afford (eg elderly) then the governemnt has a system for supporting the scheme.
Hopefully those at risk of knock on door crooks can have a solid source of help - maybe linked with other support - Age Concern but it gets people working even for a few hours.

Good idea. Needs a bit of tweaking. I have no end of elderly relatives in Britain that need help. Woman in Port[patrick needs her bin taking out each week on a steep gravel coated road, My mum and dad lawns mowing, The list is endless.
However a lot of these "jobs" should just be done by friendly neighbours but they can't be arresd
. Where did it go wrong.

I thought of it yesterday when I had more jobs to do than time available and said to Mrs if there was someone I could ring and get them to clear this bloody leaves etc and I just followed it from there. Whilst I am into market systems I am not adicating an auction or anything it is a matching system which brings the informal/hidden market more into the open and protects those who may get tucked up by the crooks.
I am sure a pilot scheme could be justified but to develop it in detail would need some dosh.
As regards what happened to neighbours - there are people around to help but everyone is so busy doing nothing these days that human contact is at a premium. I suppose it also links with volunteering sites but how can those without a job needing money realistically contribute as volunteers

An interesting thought, and could work at so many levels...... :y Mind, I also think that some people in prisons, those with the skills should be out doing the jobs for the old folk, decorating, cleaning gardening etc...with the right level of supervision of course.. :)
Like you there are many times when I could do with someone coming in and doing the odd little job that I am unable to do or simply do not have the time for.........I do use a local young lad for some gardening work, and will have quite a project to do next year, still at school so can only use him at the weekend....
