has anyone got any ideas waiting for the right mig to come up after the d/driver wrecked mine i have a mondeo 3 zetec 1.8 with the duratec engine,Its not a bad car but its developed a cam sort of tapping ?? Its ok when you first start up from cold very quiet but when it warm its starting to sound like a quiet diesel,
I have taken the auxillary belt of and tried and its still there so thats the pulleys water pump etc out of the question.
If you stop it for 15 mins then start up its quiet but soon taps again i have changed the oil done an engine flush and put the correct grade of oil back in it.The car has done 90k genuine milage so its not had a hard life.
if anyone can help with just an idea please as to start spending money on cams or engine rebuilds just puts a mig back even further.

I have a feeling these had solid lifters, so unlikely to be those.
Chain tensioner slackening off when the oil is hot, perhaps? Does it sound like a rattly chain?
Hmm. Can't think what else to suggest. :-\
Do the noises happen just at idle or are they still there at higher revs?

Is what you`re hearing, 'piston slap'? :-\
IIRC: Zetec engines are specified for 5-30 oil, (I think because of the use of piston-bottom oil jets)......has it been run with a heavier grade?
No expert: `just thinking out loud. ;)

Its a tap when ticking over and its nowhere near as bad when you build the revs up doesnt sound like a chain rattle, if anything it sounds like a pully bearing rattle/tap thats why i took the auxillary belt of as i ave heard the belt tensioners go a lot,
But no thats ok

Double check the oil is the correct grade, my son did this once with his, put a different oil in and it knocked like a pig, changed again using the correct oil and it was fine. Other than that, I'm not sure :-\

Early Zetec engines had issues with thicker grades of oil. The urban legend I heard was due to lifters pumping up when cold. They did have piston cooling oil jets, but only the 2 Litre variant, IIRC, and later went to solid tappets anyway, so oil choice was less critical. However, this is a different engine (confusingly, Fraud started using "Zetec" as a model designation at about the time they stopped making the "original" Zetec engine). ::)
This'll be a "Duratec I4", a rather different animal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Duratec_engine#Ford_global_straight-4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Duratec_engine#Ford_global_straight-4). However, I'd be surprised if it weren't specified to use a 5w30 oil too, TBH.

Hiya fella, ive got both a 1.8 ('04) & a 2.0 (06) as well as the Omega. I seem to remember there being an issue with the intake flaps (intake manifold) being a known problem on these engines before the facelift Mondeo came out, so pre late '03 cars or there abouts. Can't remember the details/checks tho...sorry and best of luck. Hope it helps :y
