Now this may meet with apathy, BUT, i have now seen at least 6 other forums who have adopted the same attitude and have started to email their local MP
if you want to find out who yours is, look here:
http://www.writetothem.com
I'm not talking of spamming them, just sending them a letter reminding them that they are voted for by the people and asking for them to look at this as an issue that has been raised by one of their constituents
Here is a draft of a letter that has been used a bit by other people, replaces the XXXXX's with your own details
Dear XXXXXXXXX,
I am a constituent of yours and living in XXXXXXX. I would like to express a sense of outrage at the new VED rates announced in the budget this week.
What concerns me is the retrospective part of the new proposals. I can understand the logic of increasing taxes on new cars, to try and alter peoples behaviour and maybe help drive down CO2 emissions. However, I see no motive whatsoever in the retrospective part, in that cars registered from March 2001 are now being re-banded.
The cars in question are already on the road, and this tax (which in my case goes from £XXX up to £XXX) is nothing to do with the green agenda, but simply a crude way of taxing the beleaguered motorist still further.
This is grossly unfair, as it is a cost which was not predicted in budgeting what is probably the second most expensive purchase many people make. It is not as simple as just selling the cars either, as for one, the value of such cars will take a larger hit in depreciation, with people understandably not wanting to pay this extra taxation.
This aspect of the VED scheme appears to have gone largely unreported by the media, as they have concentrated solely on the new "showroom" tax.
We know this labour government has built the whole economy on a paper foundation of increasing house prices and now that it is coming to an end the picture is far from rosy, but to tax people in this manner is a disgrace.
I see this tax simply as a way the Labour government can increase funding for other problems. I doubt the majority of the money raised would be put back into improving public transport or the road network.
Does the Labour government not realise that many of the higher emission cars are used more for a weekend drive, and lower/mid-range emission cars are more for daily use which results in the lower/mid-range emission cars polluting more over a longer period of time?
The Labour government already have more fuel tax from the general public thanks to the fuel prices already increasing by around 20p a litre in the last year or so.
I believe the best way to "go green" is to lower VED to a sensible rate, to increase fuel duty as this truly is the best way to make the driver pay for the use of the vehicle whilst on the road, and to bring in some legislation similar to the Californian Emissions Law that will force the car manufacturers to make lower CO2 emitting vehicles. This sort of bill would have my support as a voter.
I would be extremely grateful if you could raise awareness of this issue as I feel it will be a very large problem for the labour party and when people realise the cost increases involved is a sure vote loser for them. A Conservative policy of continuing the high VED charges for NEW high polluting vehicles but without the retrospective part would I am sure be highly popular amongst the millions of motorists. I have been gauging the mood on several internet forums and the mood is truly one of fury and outrage.
In anticipation of your response,
Yours sincerely,

This type of letter has already been sent to our local MP, we get on very well on our estate and we all got together and took the petition & letter to him at his surgery...........i can honestly say it seemed to fall on deaf ears.he came out with a load of bull on the reasoning behind it........to be honest we will carryon paying the rip off VED, the public will moan but no action will be took.............the great british public get sh%t on all the time and we allow it to be rubbed in.
-
will have about as much impact as a fly in a windscreen...
remember, we have no say in this country, and even then, all the majority of the british public do is sit there moan about it, and they wussy out in regards to taking any sort of action.
Really makes me laugh...

I'm going to either vote some randon none-associated tosh, or vote BNP.
Rather put it to good use voting for someone else than not at all, as if everyone was in the same frame of mind and not voting, then all the labor fanboys or whoever will get the vote, no matter how minute the turnout is!

Hadn't thought about this but I have written to my MP in the past regarding issues that concern me and, whilst one letter won't change the world, he did at least read it and respond. This makes it more valuable than these farcical petitions to the PM, IMHO. If every MP got a sack full of such letters they would be at least aware that a large cross section of the public are deeply unhappy, and that supporting further such moves would be political suicide.

I would have not minded so much if fuel duty had been raised.at least that way you pay for the miles you do..........as is, i will pay exactly the same as the rep who covers 25,000 miles a year as opposed to me who does 10,000, albeit he will pay for his fuel more than me but he is spewing more Co2 than me.

the MP's are duty bound to reply and in my experience, they do, may take a while but, they do. the thing is to swend letters to a local LABOUR mp, if you send to your local conservative mp then that just gives them more fuel to argue with the opposition, but if you target the Labour ones, this will give them an idea about how the constituants actually think of labour, oh sod it, send one to them ALL. ;D

We live in a country of free speech.....and that includes the right to complain when things are done that we feel are unjust.
So what do we do,........sit here and bitch about how our VED is going to go up year on year with a 'woe is me attitude' or actually do something about it?
We can complain on here until the next government are elected.....and the next one after that, unless you make your point directly to the people who make these decisions then you may as well say nothing at all.
Apathy is THE single biggest reason why we get steamrollered in this country, we cant be bothered to stand up and say no.....the french seem to be good at it, are they any different from us?
here's the way i see it, i am able to complain in private because i complain in public.

a bit off topic . At the time of the last refinery blockades, did Blair make it the responsibility of the refineries for delivering fuel to the petrol stations etc
