Title: Buying Advice - 2.2 with damaged head valves
Post by: PAULCDX on 08 December 2011, 12:53:10
Hi All,

Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place lol,

I'm after some buying advice please, I've seen  2.2 for sale as a no runner due to damaged head valves apparently. The ad states that the water pump and timing belt have been replaced but the car will still not start??

It's an 03 plate with 65k

Any ideas, or am I looking at a costly repair somewhere?
Thanks as always,  ;)

Paul

Seems bizarre that someone had apparently changed the cambelt and waterpump on an engine with bent valves. :-\
Perhaps they were naive enough to hope that no internal damage was done when the cambelt let go ?
I would imagine you would need to source another head and then rebuild the top end with new gaskets/seals/stretch bolts, as required.
Need to get a list of whats required with prices, add that to the price of the car and then decide whether or not its worth your while . :y

Afaik you will need....
Cylinder head
Camcover gasket
Head gasket
Set of head bolts
Inlet manifold gaskets/seals/o-rings ? (dont know much about 4 pot setup)
Exhaust manifold gasket.
Receipts for the new cambelt/tensioners/waterpump - or budget for replacing them also.

You need to be buying it at close to scrap value to make it worth the bother.

DIY, you'd be looking in the region of £150-£250 for the bits for a top end rebuild depending on how many valves have been bent or the damaged valves haven't taken out all the guides with them or done any damage to the piston heads! in which case it might be worth your while obtaining a second hand head from a Breaker? :-\

I bought a head from a breaker, I was a bit desperate, and it cost £150. However I then found a small place that did heads and replaced 4 damaged valves and guides for around £60.

I have seen another 03 2.2 CD on ebay for spares or repair due to a snapped cambelt 91k on clock.....

Apart from needing the obvious new cambelt kit replacing, is there much else that could be wrong??? How much is the car worth in present condition??

Cheers Guys,

As a guess, part needed will be : head rework, mine cost about £50 for 4 new valves, plus a new timing belt kit AND WATER PUMP, plus head stretch bolts, plus maybe a few gaskets. Their is also the possibility of a couple of exhaust manifold studs snapping. You are probably talking at least £160 for parts alone, and a significant amount of time.

Trouble is if the garage doing it don't fit all new bits it may fail again shortly. I fitted a new belt kit, but didn't replace the water pump, which failed 15K miles later, so I had to do the whole lot again.  http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=80743.msg1065949#msg1065949 and  http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=42201.0
