as well as considering an omega estate, im looking at all sorts of estates and 4x4s.
what would you recommend?
a few im considering is the volvo v70, the volvo xc70, suzuki grand vitara, mercedes ml, landrover freelander.
will have to be a diesel. all this so i can get my new boxer pup in the back and away for walks in the woods etc.
pros and cons for any of the above would be appreciated, and if you can recommend anything else, feel free :y
maximum budget for new car will be around £3000

How about this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2002-NISSAN-X-TRAIL-SPORT-SILVER-/120820364310?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item1c21747416

there is no equivalent 4x4 crossover for Subaru .. if you are after a good 4x4 in all road conditions, its the one to go for..

I know the troubles of height - i'm 6'4 and can never own a lot of cars i want. Mits L200, Navara etc.
How about this http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201147430998507/sort/locasc/usedcars/body-type/4x4/price-to/4000/price-from/2000/postcode/g24pp/radius/1500/page/2?logcode=p

mm,seems very similar to the x-trail?

The Volvo is FWD, and not much fun to drive. The grand vitara isnt really grand and is similar to the other Jap 4X4s in the links above. Older Merc Ml's are notorious for having poor build quality and can run up huge bills. But they are cavernous load luggers. Freelander is a reasonable choice but again lots known to go wrong on them with and can be quite expensive. Stick with the Omega, cheap to buy and run with a great forum that supports it.

You have probably been through Ebay but just in case this struck me as being nice

Still a bit of trek I know, but sometimes worth it for the right vehicle.
