i have a single thump noise which occurs every time i go over a bump. it comes from the rear on my 2002 2.6 elite auto estate. any thoughts what it could be?

spare wheel not screwed down propper. any thing in side compartments lose.

If not above start checking exhaust suspension etc
something is either loose or worn.
-
exhaust banging due to broken mount ?
suspension mounts loose?,
rear anti roll bar bushes?
also check that your tailgate is closing properly and isnt loose ?
just a few things to check :y

Could also be a failed shock absorber. Are there any signs of fluid leakage on rear shocks?

Not enough carpet wrapped around the body in the back.

if it is suspension based, and not random like sumat loose or flapping around, thats got to be favourite. Esp if self level shocks fitted, they leek thier oil, damping is lost and the wheel leaves the road over bumps, landing again with a bang/thump. Trade card link below, makes self level shocks half price.
If thats whats causing it, and you want to stay stock with Elite suspension. Comfy, but wobbly. ;)

Thanks for all the replies guys, im working my way through the possibles now. I know its not the obvious ones like loose stuff in load area or unsecured spare wheel. Will let you know what it turns out to be

All becomes clear!!!! Ive done a test on the self levelling suspension today and find only the passenger side pumps up with air being expelled out the bottom of the drivers side one. With assistance bouncing the car whilst holding offending shock changes note of the knock. So two new shocks now ordered albeit not self levelling ones!!!
