Hello peeps, got a but of a problem. My son has internet upstairs and we bought him wireless internet. The router is called Netgear DG834GT and the wireless adapter that goes in the back of the laptop is a Netgear WG111T. The router workes on are downstairs computer but it doesnt work wireless.
I installed the program on the laptop and it only comes up for a second then goes again.
In device manager, it is an 'unauthorised device' but i dont know what to do.
Any advice?
Im on Vista by the way :y

I don't know vista stuff at all .. but I'm guessing windows firewall blocking it ?? Can you try turning off all firewalls and see if it connects ?
-
is it password protected on your wireless, i have a password on mine to stop unuathorised access

Check your security encryption type. Some wireless adapters don't support the latest WPA 2 encryption protocols, and I've seen this behaivour before. It could also be because the router is not set to broadcast it's SSID.
- Log into the router
- Click on wireless settings
- Check the "Broadcast SSID" option is enabled
- Check that the encryption is set to WEP or WPA-PSK (WPA-PSK is the ideal choice).

hello, the firewall is off.
On the downstairs computer, the wireless internet works fine its just the laptop

Still handy to check the encryption type. As I mentioned, I've seen this exact behaivour from a friends laptop which was caused by an unsupported encryption type on the laptop's wireless card. Netgear router also.
Oh, and I wouldn't recommend leaving the firewall off unless you fancy becoming a new addition to a botnet :P

what?! netgear are great home routers!! :-?

I suspect this is to do with the wireless adapter you plugged in to the laptop, most likely the driver didn't load right.
2 things you can do - 1 easy, 1 not.
Easy - plug the laptop in using an ethernet (CAT5) cable. If you can get on the internet your problem is only with the wireless bit. Firewall is not the problem.
Harder - uninstall the driver for the wireless card (Google this until you know how). Make sure the driver software is Vista compatible. If you are unsure, download the right ones from the Netgear website. Re-load them taking care to put the card back in at the right point in the sequence. (Often after drivers are installed).
Keep us posted.

awful things. piss poor 'firewall', unstable under heavy load, poor line-up times. If you get a firmware that works for you, stick with it, as for every fix they implement, they break several more things.
Oh, and netgear are the reason several ntp servers shut down to internet a couple of years back, as some pillock at netgear decided to hardcode ntp servers into firmware, then make a mistake of setting the resync timer to 1 minute :-?. They fixed it in next firmware by using different ntp servers, but kept the 1m. Idiots.

Well it wont be the netgear router that they are having trouble with as that wont have a driver, it will be the USB wifi dongle.
I have to say that I have found Netgear to be one of the best budget home routers by far....

I think changing the router will be more simple than changing the op.system and backing up all the files..

As has been said, routers dont need drivers. I think they were referring to your USB adapter, which would make sense.
TB: You're talkin about netgear routers in the business world... don't think I've had a single complaint about their home networking stuff (except drivers for their USB adapters :P).

to be honest guys, o dont really have the money to go and buy a new router, i have XP on cd anyway and ill back everything up on my hard drive :y

When I first had my Vista on my laptop.. MS had not written a driver for COM PORT TO USB ADAPTOR... there was soon a download for this after I contacted them... have you tried connecting to the lan and installing all MS updates then rebooting... just a thought :-/

Buy a new wireless card, not a new router!

No, I am specifically talking about their consumer ADSL routers - the DG series!
