By the way TB,when you say capability what do you mean.As i am working for an electronics company at the moment. And i have been given permission to use all and any equipment,at work or home.As well as myself and my wife are certified J std solderers. What would we need, and can new ribbons be sourced.Just a thought :y

Capability to reconnect ribbon to LCD glass.
IN the case of Rovers, its not often the ribbon (is occasionally, but rear window paint can fix that), but just a poor connection between ribbon and LCD glass, or connection between ribbon and PCB.
Suspect Omega displays are similar.

So i would have no problem with ribbon to pcb, because the ribbon wire would be soldered to pads. With the ribbon to lcd glass,is another matter. It may be soldered to lcd glass with pads,or it may be heat transferred. We happen to have a heat transfer machine at work,is there a picture of the ribbons on the display any where on the forum. :y

The last one I had apart looked like it was glued (or electronic equivalent, ultra sonic?) as it definately wasn't soldered. On looking closely it looks like the ribbon was just disintegrating (this was an early two socket MID) as when I carefully tried to undo it all it just fell apart :-[

The ribbons are readily available from quite a few places for a mere few pence usually.
But as they are chemically / heat bonded to the glass, they are of little use as they require some very specific and expensive machinery to join them together.
Hand held soldering devices are of no use as you cannot get a "level" clamp / bond, and a bench mounted bonding machine with clamps and jigs was around the £3K mark secondhand when I last enquired a few months ago.

You are right Dave,chemical/heat bonded asked at work today. My boss said i am welcome to use the bonding machine, but i will have to buy the clamps and jigs myself.I am going to look in to it,as i could probably recoup my outlay repairing them.I will keep you posted,Dean
