Title: Steering Problems
Post by: fcc-pt on 16 December 2011, 17:04:38
Hi, I'm getting a very annoying and probably dangerous situation when driving on irregular road. particularly when running over 100Km/Hr the car starts to go kinda of jumping to right and left which deliver me the sensation of danger! I took it to a garage, the suspension has been meticulously seen. Appart from the front shocks structs and rear shocks damage the mechanic as told me that the steering box as to be replaced due to slack between the mechanical parts inside the box. Well, in the past year I've spent a little fortune replacing parts... I also noted that above 130/140Km/Hr the car goes left and right just a bit and start to tremble a lot.

Alloy wheels has been checked and are perfect, thus not warped. The tyres are new (the old ones it had same behavior). New front axle bearings, bushings, mounting stabilizers, rods, steering lever, front new shock absorbers and some more parts.

If I turn the steering wheel fully to left/right I feel a gap between left and right but only when completly turned. When in normal position everything ok.

So, what can I do, do I realy need to replace the steering box?

Thank you.
But do you think that the gap I do refer is normal?

That's normal. Having spent the last 5 years trying to get various omegas to go straight, I can tell you that was one of the things I suspected at the start. I now have a fairly straight driving omega, and the play you describe is still there, and has been on all....4?.... omegas I have owned, and all the ones I've looked at for others on here.

The omega can get very wayward/random/dangerous  quite easily with an accumulation of minor faults. Most of which arcovered here...  http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90492.0

Tyres, and tyre wear are vital. If they wear incorrectly even slightly the handling will be affected.
The way the tyre is "presented to the road" is very important. So the correct  camber settings of -1degree 10 minutes MUST be used. With toe of minus 10minutes.

Steering boxes vary rarely fail. The link Rob posted does say there us more play at the steering wheel when not straight ahead.

The last time it has been in a garage, has replaced tyres, checked rims etc.. I've noticed that with the engine off (ignition unlocked and hand break off) with the car lifted up in the elevator and the front wheels resting on a circular platform (that move in turn of his own center) a gap with less that an inch could be heard if the wheel was turned with some vigor to left and right. Is that normal? I guess that noise it's inside the steering box because I can't see any gap between rod's etc...

Some terminology differences here, I'm not sure what you mean, but if your talking about the road wheel moving with an inch of play then no. Not normal.
Perhaps you could post a video with a mobile phone?

If testing steering box it's best done with engine running.

After two years and a new battery which is included in the 4000€ spent with several repairs :) "my precious" is now back to run.
The problem remains after new tyres, steering box and power pump review. The car still has a significant amount of play when driving on irregular road.
In fact I only feel that play when it comes to irregular road and the suspension comes in action! What might that be?

The excess of play, only reveals when the front suspension gets in to action I feel the wheel with a metallic knocking sound... might be because the suspension (bilstein b4) is harder than the original one?

When I hit the breaks on iregular road i feel the car front going left and right, need some help with this one.

Facts:
- Only get play when suspension front suspension gets in action.
- Only get left right behavior when breaking on irregular road

* Iregular road = ups and downs and small holes or stone road

Wishbone bushes failing... knocking will be either droplinks, ball joints or track rods :y
