Hi all looks very much like my front wheel bearing is trying to escape started knocking whilst travelling and got progressively worse as i limped home on inspection wheel looks to be sat at an angel and is certainly knocking when rocked. Question is would this be a job that i could under take or would it need garage surgery. Also where would be the best most reasonable place in which to source a part. Many thanks guys and merry Christmas to you all :y :y :y :y

A lot of us have used those Conti bearings in the past with no issues...however lately, there have been more than a few reports of a lot of play in them...
So be aware.

Indeed. Fitted one at Newent, which replaced one a couple of months old. Both contitech from bpb. Both had play when torqued correctly. Even the usual trick of over torquing couldnt sqeaze the play out. Seems to be a tolerance issue between the inner race surfaces.
So not recommended. Others also had issues. AA and Entwood perhaps...?
There was talk of a guy working for Skf that might be able to supply. Did anything come of it?
-
Yes, AA as well iirc..
Entwood's was QH I think?
Sure there was a few others too....

Mark managed to tighten mine up.

To the OP (Steve). Euro carparts do an SNR front hub assembly (same quality as SKF) for £102. Part # 628720080.
Regarding my original link, I can only comment on my experience with them. :)

Front wheel bearing is not a difficult job, does need a 320Nm torque wrench though.
I fitted a "buypartsby" one .. less than £30.. lasted 3000 miles and failed in France. Only one available was a Quentin Hazel one ... €200 :( at Newent it was discovered it had excesssive play so ended up saying "sod it" and went GM £121 (with trade card)
Really wish I had gone genuine the first time, the difference in quality was easily noticeable straight out of the box.
Just my thoughts :(

I replaced both of mine with ones from Autovaux, about £60 IIRC. Both have now done over 10k and are fine.

Anyone looking for a 320nm torque wrench, Halfords do one just short of 320, cant remember if it goes up to 300 or 310 on the dial, but it will take the extra adjustment by judging the increments on the gauge. £75 iirc
doubt we'll find one cheaper capable of 320nm.... ?

Tip from taxi al i think. :y
