Title: Never ever buy a rather french car!
Post by: Gaffers on 21 December 2011, 12:12:41
This is the advice I gave to my neighbour which was duly ignored.  Sure enough it failed it's MOT on rear brakes which have caused me no end of trouble to sort out, hence the many posts about it on here.

End result was the adjusters, being made of swiss cheese, had failed so I got replacements at Peugeot and new shoes because the ajuster on there was buggered and you cant get it individually.  Once back together it was working great until the 1 month old cylinder procured at Eurocarparts decided to explode!

Much cursing and kicking of cars (with the proper foot protection) later it went back through it's MOT earlier today with a clean bill of health.  Fair dos to ECP for replacing it without hesitation but still that's the 3rd item I have had to take back to them over the last 3 years or about 40%  :o

Yet they slag off Camberley Autofactors everytime I am in there, not had an issue with their parts yet plus they give trade price to HM Forces :y

The French love em though. Don't see many French members on here....
Ever searched French eBay for omega stuff? Bit thin on the ground to say the least.

I actually like the 206 though, especially the 2.0 HDi :y

in the last years Peugeot cars have definitely failed.. and there are some groups here that move in common to get their rights in front of the law.. however, renault has factories here (for more than 25 years) and their production is designed towards our road conditions, so I can say (at least for the last 10 years) we dont have much problem with their cars except some small problems and their relatively high price..

and for the citroen: my mechanic friends love them so much  ;D

In that heading you're more than correct G.

In the late '70's - '79 from memory - I bought my wife a new Renault 18 as she was tired of driving Volvos.  What a mistake.  The car was woeful - appalling build quality, a gear shift that wobbled about like a dog's dick and horrible torque steer to mention but a few (dozen) things.

She kept it for a year and ditched it for the known quantity that was Volvo.

We also used some Renault 30's in the Ghost fleet - but they never lasted long given the requirement to lug heavily tooled-up Peelers about: sadly, this was far more than the questionable build quality of the cars could manage in most cases.

That description gives me the mental image of the Keystone Cops in the middle of a chase with the car falling to bits around them. ;D

I nearly went there but the puppets got it off although the pins.holding the shoes to the hub went.  If they hadn't the angle grinder would definitely have been deployed  ;D

Could have told you that for free ::)

Only two good things about them:

1. Most are quite fun to drive
2. they don't rust wot like they used to :P

Else best avoided. :y

p.s. £4 for a sump plug washer for my old Renault 25. No wonder it had never been serviced... :-X

;D ;D ;D  I could tell you some stories about incidents that would have made those scenes believable - but that would be for a meet.

As well as seeing my ugly mug, you'd get a laugh (at the stories, not my fizzog)

That Renault 18 I mentioned earlier, Al, started to rust along the rear wheel arch to boot floor seams within a year from new. :(

My Dad also bought a new Renault in the early 80,s (fancied a change from VX) dont remember which model tbh. He accellerated away from a roundabout and the drivers seat mountings broke with the force of the accelleration!!,leaving him more or less in the rear seat lookinf at the roof lining while trying to bring the car to a halt, which he somehow managed to do. ;D

Ive had loads of Peugeots and Citroen and never really had a problem worth mentioning. Luck of the draw in most cases.

I had a Renault 25 TXE once before. It was ever so comfy, and it used to speak which was very, very cool. However I bought it for my ex Mrs. We had it I think 3 months in that time, the rear n/s electric window broke, the auto gearbox went, and the exhaust fell off. Other than that it was good. Originally I bought it for the mrs with plans to sell on, which I did, a £3000 car at the time sold for £500, due to the huge costs of anything from Renault.
