Title: Replacing Reg. Plates
Post by: Webby the Bear on 29 December 2011, 11:08:26
Hi guys,

as above, I'm just about to order new plates through the site that RobG kindly provided but it mentions ''instructions on how to fit''. Hmmm is it not just an unscrew old, screw in new?

Not if you have to drill holes in new plates. Put the old one over the top of the new one tape together (put tape over area back and front on the new plate were hole is going to be first) then drill hole and plates will fit as the old one's did :y

I've seen that sort of surround before, normally allows for quick change for showplates. Though normally badged with MaxPower and Turbo and I am a Chav, rather than plain like yours.

Because it looks much neater, especially after some time when the streaks of dirt/shite/ rust etc. gradually run downwards from the screws and cause ugly staining to the plates.

I've not long since removed a set of these from my car. Are you interested? ;)

Horrid, horrid things. And the bumper's been drilled by a 4 yearold on a pogo stick by the looks of it...

Not that I've ever noticed and rust etc on the plates, eve that would look better than a Blue Peter Sticky backed Plastic number plate smashed by being run over every time it falls off ::)

The better half just confirmed they've been ordered  ;D

I am replacing mine for 2 reasons really. A.) I like the Euro GB Stripe (sad I know), B.) all water and sh1t has got in to the back one and the 4 is a kind of 'A' which I've heard is illegal  ;)

Mine have been stuck on for years now for the reason Albs say ........ it looks better ie no screws on show. I've had to re-fix my front just once due to the curve of where the front plate sits & the fact that there's not a full area behind it to fix to.  ;) ;) :y

What are they stuck on with though , wish id thought of that when i replaced mine a few weeks back although i guess you have to be careful whats used to stick it in case it reacts with the backing on the number plate  :-\  ie: no nails  :)

The old self tappers are horrid , squeaked like fek undoing them .

Wide trim tape is so much neater and nobody can nick your numerplates

Double sided sticky tabs from Halfords. IIRC I used the thinner of the two sizes available.  :y :y :y Make sure everything is properly clean as you fit them, due to the curve of the front bumper it'll come off on one side if you don't.  ;)

And he was using a blunt spoon to make the holes.
This is why I don't like screwed/bolted on plastic plates on modern cars. Wide, double sided trim tape is the way to do it. Quick, cheap and easy. If you clean the surfaces effectively(quick squirt of brake/carb cleaner or acetone will do the job), you have to really want them to come off. Looking around, very few people pay any attention to where the screws go/line up and just look dreadful. And that's before they go rusty.

When using pressed aluminium plates on an older car, I do tend to bolt them on as they're often just hung under the bumper; but then I use the same polished button headed stainless steel screws that I use everywhere else for non-critical items. And that goes into a properly set rivnut as self tapping screws are an abomination.
