Title: 98 Renault Megane - Cutting out & over revving
Post by: Neil (Cardiff) on 29 December 2011, 21:19:18
Hi all,

My sister has a 98 Megane 1.6. Recently it has been cutting out all the time, even when changing gear and has been often idling at around 4000rpm. Any ideas or common faults on these things??

The only other thing to note is the engine temp takes forever to get up to normal, infact quite often it doesn't. I'm not sure that is relevent and I'll be checking the thermostat for that one, but you people might know something I don't

I haven't worked on a Renault since I had a Renault 19 about 8yrs ago, so I'm a little unfamiliar with its logistics!

Any comments grateful.

Thanks.

Maybe coolant temp sensor?
That would explain the iffy guage, over revving and cutting out.

Thank you. I was going to start look at Idle Control sensors ect. I assumed the temperature would be a faulty thermostat and never even thought they would be connected.

Silly me eh! :y

If you're lucky, it will be a cheap fix. I had scenic with the same engine and the same problem. Talking about renault problems....name it, i fixed it (or was trying to  :P) Engine should look like this .... (http://i1103.photobucket.com/albums/g480/danzigfan1/0_megane-8v-engine.jpg) and what you're looking for is MAP or mass air flow sensor looking like this (http://i1103.photobucket.com/albums/g480/danzigfan1/MS002.jpg) and lives (if you take a look at the first picture) under thet viper blade compartment in front of the fire wall on pic's up right. There is a rubber hose going onto the MAP sensor. It's probably rotted. Unplug it and engine will cut of. Replace it and I hope it will be ok. I hope you have this simple problem
