A lot of kids have "smartphones" these days Tunnie (Blackberry seems to be the rage amongst the kids for some reason), although I do agree that buying an iPhone for a 12 year old is a bit much.
We personally drew the line at buying our youngest (13) an Xperia X8 (£100), that's more than enough and I can stomach losing that if he loses or breaks it.
