Title: 25.8 MPG......Why?
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 01 January 2012, 19:37:29
I regularly drive the 400 mile round trip from Lincolnshire to Powys in my 2.6 MV6. Petrol consumption is ALWAYS in the region of 31/33 MPG according to the trip computer.

I've just recorded a piss poor 25.8 MPG for the exact same trip.........(less traffic than usual, too.)

Any idea why, chaps?.

No warning lights showing, and she is running faultlessly. Air filter?....

Thermostat sticking open?

Possible.

Ticking over on the drive the fans will eventually cut in. In normal driving the temperature needle barely gets off it's stop......especially with the AC working.

You can tell if the multi rams work by a good blast of the throttle

you should see multi ram move on the bag pipes

Thats not going to help, you need a new thermostat for a start :y

How about a rubbish tank of petrol?  There is some about.  I've not had problems with the Omega but the bike has pointed me to avoiding one particular outlet due to abysmal running.

Definitely.  In my very recent experience a dead thermostat wipes off 4 or 5 mpg straight away.  Keep the A/C off - as you imply, the extra cooling caused by the heater matrix trying to warm the cooled cabin air is enough to push the engine temperature down noticeably this weather.

Lies deep between the creamy bosoms of the lusty V6 if memory serves ;D ;D. Why do Vauxhall make it so inaccessible to the novice mechanic such as myself.... :'( :'( :'(?

I should have asked Mark to replace it when he fitted a new oil cooler for me......DOH.... :'(

Open the bonnet of Mrs Opti's Corsa 1.2 SXI and the stat is right  there in full view. A ten minute job.......just as it should be.

I have fond memories of a stat change on the V6 - with much valuable help/direction from Elite Pete. Thanks again Pete  :y

The joys of the B Bolt, then the hose which could only be removed from the end of the coolant xfer pipe by cutting it off and concluded with the xfer pipe itself which could only be separated from the stat housing by sacrifice!

Agreed re the Corsa, did my Daughters in a Jif.

Good luck

I'm guessing that they figure that parts such as thermostats are now so reliable that access isn't an issue any more.

Meanwhile, the beancounters spot an opportunity to have a couple of pence per car by fitting cr@p chinese thermostats... ::)
