What was the maximum amount of fuel which were you able to put in the tank? With any car I had (except Omega) I was able when getting (very) low on fuel, to fill the tank (in some cases with 10 liters! - Nissan Terrano II) over the "official" capacity. The Omega fuel tank is 75 liters but I was never able to fill the tank with more than 71 liters, even when the low fuel light was blinking (for quite a long time). Not to mention that I run out of fuel once because I didn't believe the flushing light ... oh, with a diesel engine... :'(
-
Fuel gauge and related light are both very much on the safe side. I've had 3 kilometres range on my MID and still was able to put only some 70 litres to tank.
-
Ive had 0 miles flashing on mine for over 10 miles on one occassion. As said they seem to err on the side of caution, although Ive heard people say they have run out before the range was showing zero,so there may be an element of pot luck involved.
Even when the car has run out of fuel there could still be some fuel sitting in the tank below the bottom of the fuel pickup I would imagine ?

I think no. I once ran one Omega until it just stopped due lack of fuel and it really needed more than 10 litres to re-start and I could not believe it was the reason. When it stopped I put 5 litres of fuel in and nothing, started to search any other possible faults and as a last resort I put more fuel in the tank and voilá, it started.

I thought that even when it's on the bottom of red and very low miles on the trip computer there is still 3 gallons in the tank????

Which suggests imo that my thoughts are correct. If you put 5 litres of fuel in the tank and the car doesnt start, then it would suggest that it takes more than 5 litres to bring the level up to the point where it can be sucked up by the fuel pickup. ;)

Hello! I have the same queries... explanation would be the tank surface is too wide, I cleaned the tank last year and found 8 litres of diesel when ECU actually told me that I have to walk 40 km and fuel dot flashes
-
I've driven for 20 miles with Range reading zero (though, unusually, as economically as I could!), after getting screwed on the M40. Only managed 73l, implying about 10m more in tank.

You can fill it up fully with using of ramp standed your car onto one wheel only at the tank cap side. Doing on this way more than 80 liters can be filled in BUT it's not recommended because tank needs some free air for normal operating! Don't do that!
-
Never even got 70 litres in mine even with 0 miles showing for a while.
-
I run mine down to 0 miles before and only got around 71 litres in it ::)
However whilst doing some ambitious driving in the past I run out when the trip computer read 7 Miles ?

Not this one .. but the old 2.5 when towing through France on Ascension Day .... every bloody place is shut .. we were getting exceedingly low on fuel, red light on steady for ages .. 0 on the range, I was expecting it to die at any moment when we found a fuel station open .... I got 74.6 litres in !!!!
Never forgotten it, or how worried I was .. so now we just don't let it get low !! :)

I know the feeling. Had a few clenchers driving a kit car with a 120 mile range over there. >:(

Having run one dry deliberately to check, with a fuel can in the boot. It is almost exactly 75 litres when re filling, and always found the bc figures quite accurate personally. Petrol cars only though....

OK
Who can actually afford to FILL the tank on their Omega?
you lucky Bugger

What a realist point ! :y :y :y I did once when it was sure the price will increase... :-X
-
ive filled mine up 3 times in the past 4 weeks :'(
-
Pure interest but how many clicks on the fuel pump handle will it go to if you were to absolutely brim it? I tend to just stop when it clicks once? :-\
-
Coming down from Scotland on Monday I tried just that - managed to get a little splash coming out the tank breather on to my shoes before I gave up! As for clicks, think that very much depends on the pump type! I go to 3 or 4 as the clicks get closer together each time anyway. Not as many as old cars that is for sure!
Filled up 4 times in two weeks... :'( :'( :'( :'( but don't normally drive up!
I had the tank vacuum on the Ascona back in 2007 when I was in the highlands - could only get 7l petrol in it at a time - and less if I didn't use the filler neck as capacity. Think the trip home was 10 or more steps and then got stuck in the Gloucester floods!

A couple of years ago, I was filling mine twice a week. And I only fill it when its worthwhile (ie, the light has been blinking for a while ::)), so always 65l+
Thus, I LPG'd it. Then my mileage dramatically dropped ;D

very good point ! i fill the tank 4 times in... 4 years... 70 litres is around 400 lions (80 pounds) and monthly payments is around 300 pounds for police officer :-[

Filled mine 3 times in 2 days last weekend............. :( Not much point in considering LPG either as the boot and back seats were full of stuff (tools, christmas presents, firewood [don't ask]) so I don't have space for another tank.

now you have me thinking
Helicopters have external drop tanks
dual fuel with a gas tank on the roof.
Ahh but will it act like a helium baloon? hmmm :-\
-
my understanding of all cars has always been, when the trip computer goes to zero (or petrol light comes on) that most cars have around about 30miles left before she is will leave standing still? ive lived by this even in a juice drinking range rover and its always seemed to be ok for me ... maybe im just lucky?

I had the same dilema for years, then one day it just dawned on me - I need full boot maybe 3 or 4 times a year, max. And roof boxes are cheap ::)

I've had another that only made it to 4m to go, when it ran out :-[

Or was it 18m to go :-\. Can't remember, too long ago now.
