Title: Wrench adapters. Are they available?
Post by: Webby the Bear on 11 January 2012, 10:53:32
Hi,

My new torque wrench has a 1/2" drive. But most of my socket set has 3/8" drive. Are there adapters available that will fit on to my 1/2" drive wrench and then a 3/8" drive socket can be added?

I've tried to search tut web but I', online @ work and it won't allow access to much :(

cheers.

Cheers Albs, I'll see what Halfrauds can offer when my net is up and running properly.

Do you know off the top of your head what drive sizes will be included?

I'm thinking 3/8", 1/4" and 1/2"?

Yup,  Halfords do them. Use them all the time to use the 1/2" drive on the smaller sockets...

Hellfrauds do 1/2 to 3/8 and 3/8 to 1/4 pack for under a fiver.  If you abuse them like I do, keep the receipt for lifetime warranty ::)

If you've got a 1/2" torque wrench, it almost certainly won't set low enough for small bolts(M6 for instance).

If you use a decent torque wrench on such small bolts, you'll find that you've probably been overtightening them by quite a large margin. The V6 cam covers are a good example.

So you're likely to be using it on suspension/head/wheel bolts and similar.

If I were you, I'd buy a rail of 1/2" drive sockets to use with the T/W.

The Halfords Advanced tools are decent quality, well priced, excellent value and readily available.

Actually, yes, that's a very good point. My T/W is 40-200 so for bolts on the throttle body (for instance) should be about 8nm I think so yes thanks for pointing that out!!!  :y :y :y

I recently picked up a nice little 1/4" drive T/W from Machine Mart for just over £20, for things like cam covers.

It goes down to 5nm, so compliments my 'big daddy' 1/2" T/W nicely.

Halfords do a nice one also, but its about £80!!  :o

That Halfords card you mentioned before TB sounds great. I remember you mentioning the long wait to get one and that you blagged it. Out of interest how did you do that?

Would be very handy!  :y

Got one of them too. Goes down to 4 or 6Nm IIRC. Handy bit of kit.

On there webistie i thought i saw a bit where it says ur city & guilds certificate or a business card needs to be shown to obtain a trade card. Surely u could make a bussiness card or borrow a mechanics and say  work for them
