Title: Do you like my new car? (Not an Omega)
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 18 March 2008, 22:13:24
Here is my new car, I collected last night.

Land Rover Discovery 300 series, 5 door 7 seater.
3.9 litre V8 Automatic
Very, very, very tidy for the money.

Drives really well, has upgraded suspension and doesn't have the usual body-roll, and pitching associated with landrovers. A slight whine from the transfer box but I think this is common.

Jobs to do - full service, and oil change in the gearbox, diffs, transfer box, etc... idle is VERY slightly lumpy, but only just noticable. I'll see what a full service brings.

For the money I paid, I absolutely cannot lose.

Doesn't appear to be any rust, Markie and I had a real thorough look underneith, and at the floor plan, doors, seat belt anchorages, etc...

So stop complaining about your Omega's fuel usages.. this beast does about 15mpg, and I've no plans to LPG it.  ;D

Looks very tidy ... correct number of pedals and the correct attachment by the rear bumper :)

Just as long as you don't stop working Omega's !! I'm still in the queue for an LPG fit ( I hope)  :)

Sure... I need to learn the Rover V8 inside out pretty quickly now too...

I do Love Omega's, and I'll undoubtedly get another sometime... but I just felt like it was time for a change, I've wanted one of these since I was a kid, and also it's a chance to learn about something new....

I can't fit a tank in the car, because I need the rear space for the dogs (or passengers, when the extra seats fold down)...

I don't really want underslungs...

I suspect that now I'm driving less and less I will just live with running a V8 on petrol and not bother gassing it...

I will however keep myself "on my toes" with LPG though, as a couple of members have asked for my help on conversions..

Rover V8's aren't big fans of LPG - the cylinder bores don#t stand up too well to the extra heat from the gas combustion

Nice Disco, though! If they didn't do such pathetic mpg I'd have one :y

It's not pathetic MPG.. it's quite acceptable for the size, weight, and type of car / engine :y

They're not built for commuting etc... I've just bought it for a toy ;D

I filled her up from the red today - £85 at Asda!!!

Hi James...

Nice new motor...

But does this mean that you've retired from mending Omegas now??     :'( :'(

Was hoping you'd get round to finishing mine first - is there any chance of this now??

Here's hoping..

Lol, no to be fair for what it is it could be a lot worse. I used to have a Hilux Surf  - 2.4TD, max speed? Well I once had 64 out of her. averaged 12mpg.

I kept it 6 weeks, during whcih time I had to replace every heater hose and the fuel pump gaskett.

It *did* have recaro seats, though  ;D

Nope..........the rear footstep should be in the up position.....its in the down position......so guess spring or whatever pulls it back up is broke.

Still, looks nice, and I have clocked the fact that it's got a towbar so next time my glider gets stuck in a muddy field....

So, with a rig like that I guess you will be either towing a care trailer with various members miggy's on while you fit LPG kits or the like.
The alternative must mean you are joining the, seemingly high number of closet caravaner's,  amongst the members.
Like it though swmbo wants one, but would have to be an oil burner.
 ;D ;D ;D

My bro used to have the 3.5 V8 auto version........that also did 15mpg  ;D
.......then he realised.....and moved to the 2.5 TD's autos....although he tells me a 2.5 TD flat out, on autobhans obviously  ;D , can only just get to 100mph.......not sure the fuel consumption at that speed tho.....probably 15mpg  ;D

Mark, if your offer of casting your eye over my V8 and giving me some pointers / helping me get it running nicely is a serious one... then it would be well worth the trek up to Nottingham at 15mpg.. and the chinese is on me this time ;)

Ps, 60k? You can tack 100k onto that....  ;D

The one and only RV8 I've ever stripped had half that many miles, head gaskets blown on 2 pots and barely any lobes left on the cam, despite allegedly being a "good runner".

It's now in a rather fast Westfield. My mate decided it would have been rude to replace the cam with a standard one. [smiley=evil.gif]

Set of 8 HT leads, £25 in Halfrauds, can't be too bad. Dizzy cap £6 etc... so I'm pleased so far..

I'm nervous about the MOT... but that's cos I had such a bad experience with my Rotton Range Rover.... saying that, it was a 1989, and this is considerably newer...

How old is it then mate? It's before the lights were raised but does look in great knick!?!

Is the protruding rear step an MOT failure then?

A friend of mine had a right ballache getting some paintwork colour matched for the scraped front valance on his. Nice colour though  :y
