We all know how these money making schemes work, but are they allowed to park on the pavement in order to hide themselves Eg behind a bus shelter etc? :(

If you challenge one as to why his
cash collecter van is obstructing the pavement, they get very irate ;D ;D :y :y

They are not allowed to 'hide' must be visible from a certain distance, have a speed camera sign within a certain distance, and be marked as a camera van iirc those are der rulez :y might be differant for car tax ones.

Will do that Tonka ;D ;D they park on the main road at the end of our crescent covering either direction, one behind a tree the other behind a bus stop. The local shopkeeper gets his transit out and parks right behind them. They get a bit irate at him ;D ;D

I'm not bothered by speed vans and the like, they won't catch me, well they might on the motorway and dual carriageways, but there's a spot near to me where one parks up.
It's in the block paved centre bit of a 30 mph dual carriageway, next to railings. He has to drive up a kerb to get there. Now as said, doesn't bother me, but surely you can't break the law to enforce the law? There is no marked out police bay or anything, and as obscure as it seems (we all do it) it's illegal to mount the kerb.
If I parked my car there I'd get done.

Love that shopkeeper. Had one round our way parked on double yellows within 10 ft of the main junction (illegal parking ::))

it's the buggers that disguise themselves as orange motorway maintenance vehicles and park up on bridges over the m6 in Cumbria i find a tad irritating.....
i mean, if they were white, and had stripey bits, fair comment, but looking like something else..... NO FAIR>
(mind you it's better than looking like a bloody horse box ..... Heddlu Gogledd Cymru, i'm talking to you, you sneaky gits.... )

I had one stood in my garden with a speed gun who had the cheek to try to tell me I was speeding on my bike as I approached my own house, many years ago. I asked him if he had the owners permission to be where he was,when he told me he had I told him he was lying and I would put a complaint in, then drove into my own driveway and parked the bike. The look on his face when I did was priceless. ;D

Cameras must be visible from 60 metres away in 40 mph or less areas and 100 metres for all other limits
Camera warning and speed limit reminders must be placed within one kilometre of fixed and mobile camera sites
Signs must only be placed in areas where camera housings are placed or where mobile cameras are used
Mobile speed camera users must be highly visible by wearing fluorescent clothing and their vehicles marked with reflective strips
Camera sites must be reviewed at least every six months to ensure that visibility and signing conditions are being met

Not much point in that, when as you approach all you see is a white van with its rear doors open and a camera pointing at you. >:( >:( The operators sat in the front seats wearing their bibs, are only visible when you pass the sneaky barstewards :(

The town centre police station has a small car park in front, and also about 8 parking bays where you 'have to' drive up the kerb and across the footpath to reach them.. Oh yes, forgot to mention, they are 'staff only' parking bays... >:(

They do whatever they want in order to fill the coffers, and they know they will get away with it.
If the authorities were truly concerned about road safety then surely it would be better to stop the driver at the time and point out his or her mistake?
Instead we let them carry on driving "dangerously" and send them the bill 2 weeks later because a financial penalty for something that most probably won't even remember is definately a better solution than educating them at the time ::)
Pedestrians are just as bad IMO, and it really gets on my tits when the first question is "How fast was the car going?"
When a train hits someone on a level crossing or whatever, I'll bet they don't ask the driver how fast he was going.
Hit me at 30mph and there is an 80% chance I'll live
Hit me at 40mph and there is an 80% chance I'll die
Use your eyes and there is a 100% chance you'll make it without getting hurt!!

Here is a response I have just received from Nottingham police to the question " Are your vehicles legally allowed to park on the pavement"
Parking of our vans on the pavement
The parking of our Traffic Safety Camera vehicles whilst using the camera equipment to influence driver behaviour is carefully controlled. The activity has been risk assessed not only with the safety of our staff in mind but also the motoring and other users of the highway, including pedestrians. We always allow at least room for a person with a pushchair or disabled person in a wheelchair to pass the van with ease. Enforcement operations are carried out by two Traffic Support Officers, one of whom is responsible for ensuring free passage along the pavement by pedestrians. If it is apparent that someone is having difficulty in passing the van then they are instructed to move the vehicle to alleviate the problem.
There is stated case law on this issue and there is no such thing as a partial/potential obstruction. An obstruction only exists if someone is actually obstructed. In consideration of this, staff do monitor this situation constantly with a view to moving the vehicle without delay if a problem arises. What amounts to an obstruction is a question of fact for the magistrates to decide in each case (Wade v Grange [1977], see also DPP v Jones (Margaret) [1999]. In arriving at that decision they will have regard to, amongst other things: ‘the length of time the obstruction continued, the place where it occurred, the purpose for which it was done and whether it caused an actual as opposed to a potential obstruction’ (Lord Parker CJ in Nagy v Weston [1965].
All Parking Regulation orders in force throughout the county contain an exemption applicable to any Police vehicle which is being used for a police purpose where the restriction would be likely to hinder the use of that vehicle in fulfilling that purpose, and which is taking all reasonable precautions
