What year or engine code is it? The 'pedal trick' might work...
Ignition off and hold down the brake and accelerator pedals, then turn on the ignition (don't start the engine) whilst keeping both pedals pressed down and count the e.m.l. flashes.

Either pedal or paper clip should work. Has on pretty much any Vx I've encountered :y

2002 1.4 16V (not sure on engine code, although i have the engine number on the HPI report.... )

It doesn't work on diesels neither.
