Sorting out some bits in my car storage area earlier and found a 1lt bottle of GM atf from the last time my gearbox fluid was replaced. This was around May 2008 some 100k ago and looked at the dates on the bar code area.
It says it was made 02/08 and should be used by 08/11.
Am I correct in assuming then that this is "past its sell by date" and should be disposed of or is this just for stock control reasons in the dealers .

ive had a bottle for 5 odd years & just recently put in when i changed the power steer pump. cant see it being a problem imho. ;)

Reason I ask is I am stating to get the gears "hanging on and thumping a bit " when accelerating and am suspecting either the fluid is low or it is " worn out "
As car is used everyday for 100 miles + at this time of year don,t really want to start dropping the sumps and doing a full fluid change.Have just about got time to jack up and check fluid and as I have a 1lt bottle was going to put that in , until weather warms up and work calms down so I can do full change properly.
When read dates thought I might have to break into my nicely stored Fuch,s Titan from Opie that was bought before Christmas along with filter and gaskets.

If the container is still airtight then, I guess, why worry?
The system you are topping up has been churning fluid around for a fair old time and its probably in a worse state than whats in the bottle, if you think about it a bit?? :y

So in truth even topping up with "out of date " new fluid has got to be a whole lot better than running the box with a low level of well worn fluid. :y

If it had been used by the sellby date it would now be in your auto box, to be used for another 60k.... Or a "lifetime" according to vx. What rubbish they speak.
