Title: folding key conversion
Post by: LFF64 on 16 January 2012, 19:33:15
Has any one tried these I found them on that site its just a civer and a blank key according  to the ad you just need to get the key cut and take the pcb out of the old key along with the chip put it all together
Just wondering if any one had tried them

I think train spotter Imber does the conversions, though not seen him on for a while...

Not yet, but was thinking about this myself. I need a spare key and also spotted that replacement fob. Would be a nice conversion, as the fob advert says it should take the standard circuitry board from the normal key.
I'll be giving it a go at some point, before hopping across the pond for some Tech2, but if you sort it first please let us know how it goes  :y

Martin Imber did 1 for me last year and it is still going strong :y

I bought a flip fob with a blank key shaft and got it cut from the carpass.Sent him the lot and it came back converted and works fine.

Personally I find the flip abit bulky in  my pocket so have used the old standard key mostly, but every so often I just use the flip for a change ;D ;)

I think the circuitry from the existing key should fit into the flip fob, along with the transponder. The blank key will need cut then to match the existing key.
Not sure if Martin's skills are required in every case?
Sounds almost too simple actually ............  ???

Being taller than average, and having driven a VXR astra with a genuine flip key, I thought the key was an extra stalk on the column initially when finding my way around the thing, and felt the key stuck out a bit far. Might be possible to catch a knee on it and brake sumat perhaps?
Although it was only a test drive and I wasn't really happy with the way the seat was adjusted so maybe knees wouldn't be an issue normally?

Just a thought from a tall person re a car(omega) with a non extending column :-\

I've never been so gay or so retarded to misfuel ;)

I did, two weeks ago, with a RRS that was almost empty.   :-[

In my defence, it was a never used before dark forecourt out in the sticks and I was in a rush to get back to base and finished and home for an important event.

As I discovered later, all hoses were black (not normal, as I recall) and it was only after £2.45 of unleaded went into it I realised the nozzle was green, not black.   :o

Nozzle back into the holder, nipped in to explain to assistant then filled with £50 of diesel.

Car started after fuel all mixed through and car still none the worse for the experience.

Unlike my harris which was making buttons on the way back to base, whilst listening for funny noises/imminent failure!   ;D

Is that it? ISTR a conversation we had recently where you said that any man who miss-fuels is a "Ladyboy" ::)

You seem to have gone very quiet on that train of thought now that the Highlander has done it :-X :P :D

We would have advised brimming it in that situation. At the end of the day, we used to need to add petrol to diesel to prevent it freezing until a few years back ;)

An ex-colleague of mine once got a job at a petrol station, where he was left to fend for himself on the first day.  He had a diagram of which pipes went to which tanks, so said he could deal with the delivery...  ...only when the tanker turned up did he realise he didn't know which way up the diagram went.

He did say he watched the first car to fill up afterwards drive away, not knowing if it would stop or go ::).  He only lasted there the day, decided it wasn't for him ;D

OK so £9.99 For the case and £4.00 to have the blank cut ,  its really simple to do the kit came in a few bits two halves of the case the blank key blade and a few tiny screws
The blade is pinned to the swivel section after you have had it cut (its actually easier for them to cut the new blade ) take the chip out of the existing blade (simply pulls out ) put it in the recess in the new cover prise out  the PCB from the old cover it fits in too the new cover easily .
The two halves of the new cover go together and is held togther with three screws really easy to do
When its closed up the unit is actually shorter than the standard key 25mm but when extended it is 25mm longer I dont see it being a problem when its in the ignition though
It has a small hole to allow the red LED show through this is not very big but it is ok
Time will tell how robust the unit is but keep the blade and old cover and simply swap it back over if it falls apart  ::)
