I have spotted a 2006 astra for cheap needs an engine, it's a 1.7 but I was thinking to put a 1.9 cdti 150 and 6 speed box.. I'm a virgin to any post-90's diesel technology so was wondering what's what.
Will it be straightforward ie. Old engine and box out, new one in, simples, or will I need to swap things and get lots of odds from vauxhall/eBay and it be a patchwork of different engine bits? Will it need learning on tech II To make everything talk?
If I Persue the route of a cheap car needing an engine should I stick with 1.7 in a 1.7 and 1.9 in a 1.9 or are they fairly interchangable?

Pretty different lumps as one is a GM/Fiat job (the 1.9) and the 1.7 is a Vx.
A challenging one I would say!

Engine / Trans / Drive Train/ Exhaust/ any AC pipe work / Cooling, Rad, pipes Etc, / Harness, possible complete car/ ECU/ CIM/ RBCM & Poss RBCM if fitted
Not saying it can't be done but you would need two complete cars side by side and some form of inspection for the DVLA and your insurance as it might be glassed as modified.

Well tbh my mind was having a wonder, bit like on the O2 adverts but in car land...
I saw an astra estate 1.7 06 model for under a grand in need of an engine. looked up engine prices and thought 'bargian' and the wheels of thought started turning. For a moment it all seemed to make sense for a daily driver... Cheap tax bracket, an estate so it's useful, and relatively uber-economy compared to the current v6. And a lot newer :D
I then thought 'I'd rather a 150 bhp 6 speed' but tbf it's not my driveway to go filling with even MORE cars, the hassle of doing it, plus the fact that this particular one was high mileage anyway and a fairly poverty- spec model and suddenly it lost it's appeal. But I suppose if there's plenty about that come up and engines are plentiful on the bay it might be worth perusing, albeit with the right engine it had anyway so it's more a straight swap, but I think it's back to the original plan of lpg'ing the mig. I mean for the grin factor that is out of the league of any wrong wheel drive car, especially now that I've put my uniroyals on (and the maiden journey was in the rain ;D ;D) plus what I'd save on cheaper tax I'd spend on dearer insurance, I've probably got the right idea the first time...

A different ball game and a hell of a lot easier.
In those days the engine was a stand alone unit and did not communicate with the ABS module, REC, CIM, Instruments via CAN bus so it was more mechanical with only very basic electrics.
Now its a case of re-configuring modules, many of which you cant so you have to swap them etc etc.
To be honest, if you can get it cheap and fit a lump they are pretty good and tweakable to 140-150bhp plus you would be unlikely to loose on it.

And second hand lumps are two a penny in the breakers
