Title: Prison overcrowding
Post by: Varche on 19 January 2012, 11:37:09
I see this chestnut has resurfaced. Perhaps understandably the Prison Officers are complaining about it.

Thing is no one ever wants to do anything about the problem which I would suggest is going to get worse in these times of austerity.

Build more prisons? Who pays for them? Privatise them? Not really such a good idea methinks. Just allow it to continue and apparently breed re offenders? Don't send people to prison as they know there are insufficient spaces instead fine or community service both of which don't get executed.

Maybe some former disused armed forces bases could be converted (using prison labour) to create more cells and learn skills?

I was shocked to the core by the comments and pictures of some inmates froim a central Midlands prison on BBC1 this morning. "I have been in prison five times" and so on.  Most re offended within 12 months.  Two to a cell with a shared toilet with no privacy but a Tv and a plasma screen in the well equipped Gym. Maybe they ought to put the prisoners in old folks homes and the old folks in the prisons. (old comment but still amusing)

I seen that news item too Varche .
I have to admit I felt no sympathy at all for them but did wonder if their victims were over the unwanted trauma and devastation that was thrust on them by these habitual felons .

Maybe the state could agressively take assets of crime and use that to pay for new prison beds.?

3 strikes and you're culled.
5 years or more? You're culled.
Murder, rape, child sex offences, GBH with intent - you're culled. Simple

That's not an exhaustive list of course

Dunno about the culling bit as that puts us on the same rung of the evolutionary ladder as them, but I reckon a 3 strikes rule would go some way towards being a deterrent for most of the prison population.

I'd quite happily see tax payers money spent on new prisons, especially after seeing the low life on the front page of The Sun today. I also agree with the 3 strikes rule, obviously not fit to be in society if you continuously break the law. >:(

One very simple rule that applies to prisoners. Every one of them that has been put there, needs to be there, for your safety.

We already have the "3 strikes law" for some years and there is significant difference in crime statistics! Don't wait but push your electors this law to be forced through the parliament!

Can`t agree with such a generalised statement. What risk to our safety is a person who has been incarcerated solely for example, non-payment of Council Tax ???

Do what we used to do, send them to Australia. They have even got plenty of iron-ore quarries where there are plenty of rocks for them to break.  :y

We should give proper prison sentences, like in the US, where life is normally followed by the words no parole. If the prisons are too full take a leaf out of the US system, put them in tents and make them wear pink romper suits.  :y
