Title: Bu**er
Post by: dbug on 19 January 2012, 18:21:21
Bu**er, Bu**er - just been stopped for 45mph in a 30mph limit - radar gun.

Derestricted country unlined road - 30 limit starts just as you come round a bend - plenty of police there to deal with the queue of nicked motorists!!  Think they were getting everyone as they came into the 30 limit.

Yeah, 15mph over is always going to be points, you'll never get off lightly with that.

Yeah, 15mph over is always going to be points, you'll never get off lightly with that.

It's likely to be looked at as 50% over the limit

Obviously depends on speed. As 50% over a NSL would clearly be a telling off from the old duffer with a big wig...

The A325 (Petersfield Rd) is similar, nice long straight coming all the way in to Whitehall from the Portsmouth end and the 30 limit sign is just before the brow of a very slight hill. The police wait on the other side of the roundabout in a layby, and they have perfect line of sight all the way to the top of that brow.

There is still a fair stretch of straight road between the brow of the hill & the roundabout, so there is plenty of time to come to a halt.
There have never been any accidents at that particular spot, and the 30 lollipop used to be a lot nearer the roundabout as the road layout itself automatically makes the driver slow down to an appropriate approach speed before he/she even gets to the brow of the hill.

If the old bill want to stand any chance of convincing me that the camera/gun is purely for the safety of other road users/pedestrians, I would suggest they start plotting up outside schools, etc. They would be spoilt for choice on the nickings front as offences such as parking on corners, pavements, and actually driving at speeds that are inappropriate for the conditions at the time are commonplace and present a far greater danger than someone who chooses to watch the road in front instead of a needle on a guage.

Same scenario for me recently - you can only be eligible for a speed awareness course up to 42mph

That varies from area to area ;)

Feel for you but at the end of the day, you were speeding and have to cop the penalty

Yep no question I was over the limit - as was everyone else.  Just bloody annoyed as 3 points & £60 - first speeding offence since 2001 (guess my luck just ran out  ;) ).  After I was cautioned and "booked", police asked if I knew my speed - my estimate was 44/45mph - gun showed 45mph.  At least I got that right - cop said most people seriously underestimated their speed.  They should have offered a discount !!

Producing the drivers license! I really do find it incredible that there is no law saying you have to carry a driving license whilst driving. After living outside of the UK for a good number of years and being used to carrying all the car docs and license all the time, I really cannot understand it. If you travel to foreign countries you have to prove you have the right to travel i.e. show a passport. Is only seems logical that the same should apply to driving, especially with the amount of people who drive around without a license, or whilst banned.
