depends if it a genuine or aftermarket, after market normally on with scotch locks by rear lights, genuine are pluged in just a case of tracing wires, has tow bar plug got very wet and have you opened it up to make sure wires not come out of the holder

It hasnt got wet that I'm aware of. I was hoping to just disconnect the tow bar as its not needed anyway and hoping the brake lights and indicators would work again but I havent a clue lol!

easiest way is open covers where your rear lights are and check for aftermarket wireing, the connectors are easy to spot as normally blue in colour

id say it the root of your problem from what you saying it was towbar wiring that was smoking, but think there still may be a fuse or two blown with it shortiing out
