Title: Erratic temp readings
Post by: D on 22 January 2012, 20:54:31
2003 3.2 Elite. Temp has been reading just below 80 or at highest just above the 80 mark ever since i got it. So I put it down to a defective stat. Then today whilst driving around Bluewater noticed it had surprisingly climbed to 90. Forgot about it and now its back to reading just below 80. I am now confused. Is it the stat or the sensor? Or am I getting it completely wrong? No codes via pedal and drives absolutely fine.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a stat stuck open to me....  :(

Easiest way to check the stat ... start the engine from well cold, preferably overnight, leave it ticking over while you stand with one hand on the pipe from the stat to rad, which should feel cold .. it should remain the same temperature .. cold .. until a sudden surge of heat as the stat opens once the engine has warmed up.  IF the temperature of that pipe slowly warms up as the engine warms up then the stat has failed open and is no longer doing the job it was designed to do .. :)

HTH  :)

Cheers for that. Now where is that man who has a pic for everything to show me where this pipe is?

Also just to check, it needs a repalcement rather than some sort of mending?

Pipe is the large one on the RIGHT (passenger) side right next to the dip stick ... goes to the TOP of the radiator.. :)

Thermostat requires replacement ... nowt to repair ... there are a couple of guides which may will help.....

(but I cheated and paid DLK to do mine ....and am I glad !!!!!  The bas*** bolt is a well named piece of metal......)
