I tried to do the simple job of changing the door bushed and I think I may have damaged the straps inside the door. I put the bush and did the nut and closed there were a couple of 'pops'. I took the bush out and it was broken to bits and now the strap is inside the door and wont come out. Come on people, tell me the worst :-[
I am gutted and cant believe I messed up such a simple job!
-
Lol I did this a couple of weeks back. The door strap has 4 ''grooves'' to accommodate the bush. Did the bush go nicely in these? :-\
-
Yes that bit was fine.
When I took the nut out, was the strap supposed to swing out because I think I opened the door to replace the bush and when I closed the door it went pop

Yes mate :y
To get it back in you may have to ''encourage'' it. Then bolt through (again may take a bit of ''jiggling'') and then it says it in the guide to put the securing bolt on (underneath) and to just nip it tight. However I gave it a good hard screw :D cos it kept coming loose!
-
Im sure I snapped the bracket off inside the door. The strap is now moving about freely and I can't pull it out
-
Did you support the door as you were doing it?
-
I did support it. I don't even trust myself to take the door card off now. I'll probably damage that too

By the sounds of it you didn't do anything wrong mate!
What bracket is shot??? Piccies may help if the problem is easily visible ;)

Not really a lot you can see from these pics. Cant pull the damn thing out.
-
The pics won't upload at work but I'll have a butchers when I get home... unless anyone else can offer advice on this in the meantime ;)
-
Shouldn't that strap be longer? :-\
-
The strap seems to be in the "closed" position. I think it will pull out, but remember you need the leverage of the door, perhaps a few turns of strong string, tighten it with the door closed, then open the door. You can then re-bush it.
-
Yes it should be longer! :)
Agemo, thats a good idea, i have a look to see if I can find something in my boxes of junk.
-
It doesn't look like you have ripped the check strap out of the door mate, because you can still see the bolts and metal intact in the 2nd picture.
As said, the strap has just gone to the closed position and needs pulling out. Block of wood under the strap to protect the door and provide leverage, big ol' screwdriver through the strap and lever it out. It will resist, but it will come. :y
-
So, looks like that's the answer.
I have one question.... how'd it get like that?? :-\
Would have thought when SMD opened the door the strap would have to go with it... bearing in mind he'd put the bolt through? :-\ Soz if I'm being retarded :-[
-
Twiglet, I thought there were two plates sandwiched to make the bracket and thought I snapped the one inside. Just my lack of understanding of how its put together so I hope you're right.
Webby, it got like that when I closed the door, the strap slotted into place and remained in the closed position because there is no bolt to pull it back out when I reopened the door.
-
Got the strap out by putting a cable tie through the strap and the a pillar fixing and opened the door. The strap and its fixing appears to be intact. But once the bush is in, there is a great big popping sound when I close the door, which wasnt there before.
As Arnie once said in Total Recall "what the hell is going on here?" "what did I do wrong?"
-
The whole trat thingy is available as a spare from dealer and was not expensive here so will be almost free of charge in your country :y The rolls on strap mechanism do wear and worn rollers cause noise as well as keep wearing the plastic bush so I'd replace the whole strap. And, it seems that original fault (strap being stuck in) has been due the worn mechanism.
-
Did you follow this guide mate?
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90525.0 (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90525.0)
That really is all you should need to do... :-\
-
Yes I read it so many times.
-
Do believe me, you have a busted mechanism and that's what is causing your problem. No help on that in the mentioned guide, you'll just have to simply replace the whole thing, door card off, two screws off and assembly in reversal order. Been there, got the t-shirt... :y
-
So do you think my interference caused the failed mechanism? I cant see what I did wrong to be honest. So its the actual strap mechanism thats bust or do i just carry out the reinforcement mod?
-
Like most things: if something isn't quite right, go for the easiest/cheapest option. Only then will you know if that solves the problem. The first solution isn't always the actual/final solution :-\.
P.S. It would probably have failed next time you opened the door anyway :y.
-
I removed the doorcard then removed the mechanism whole on the MV6 I had. Not hard to do with patience and you will then see if the mechanism is intact or not....
-
Can I just remove the bottom section of the doorcard on the facelift? I'm a bit reluctant to remove the whole thing as I have read the top section is a bit fiddly to get off and often clips get broken.
But if it is the only option then it has to be done.
I might as well reinforce both brackets as the doors are getting a bit stiff.
-
FL door card is in one piece :y
-
You'll likely need the whole thing off anyway to allow access.
