Post by: farmboy on 25 January 2012, 20:53:02
Hello, I'm having a prolem with the engine on my 1998 omega 2.5 turbo diesel. it will start when I turn the key but stops when I release it! Is this a crank sensor problem, can I test it? would be glad of any help. farmboy.

sounds more like ignition lock fault if when you stop starter, it stops.
does the ignition light go out when it does this?

IME of crank sensor issues, it was starting the engine where I had the problem, once the engine was running there was no problem...

Try doing the paper clip test and post up any codes you get

Check for codes first.

also if you have one of them hand pump primers on they can leak and you not get the right amount of pressure in the line to start.

Check for codes first.
As he says check codes first and post results.
Mind the codes starts of with a test code 12 one flash followed by 2 flashes of the eml light.it repeats this three times and is the same for any other code after the test code :y
How much fuel is in the tank.

When were the glow plugs last changed. Try letting the glow plugs heat up a few times to see if that helps.

What colour is the smoke.
Also check the injector leak off pipes for drawing air and also make sure the fuel filter is seated properly

hello, I've had the glow plugs out and 1 was faulty, they have been in for about 40K. The plugs receive about 13 volts for 2/3 seconds longer than glow light on the panel is lit, is this right? Took the fuel filter out and empted into clean container, nothing to worry about there. Was new Aug 11. This car has a fuel pump in the tank so fuel is pushed up past the fuel filter at least. The return bleed pipes returns to the return pipe coming from injector pump, which then returns to the fuel tank, dont think there is much chance of air geting in here. Slackened injector pipes diesel spirting  OK still wont quiet start blackish smoke coming out the exhaust!! Many thanks farmboy.

well if it has the ability to start the only other things stopping it is no air intake or timing out of sync. or on very rare occasion water'd down fuel.

Black smoke over fueling.
Have a look at the nuts on the injector pump they may of slackened off theres 1 at the bottom below the injector pipes and another 2 either side where it bolts onto the timing plate.
I had a similar problem myself and it turned out the small cotter in where the injector pump meets the timing cog had given up and shredded itself.
Have a look at the link and you see what im trying to explain.picture 6 you can see in the mirror the keyway

There is but it will run if its breaked the only difference is the MAF the earlier engine has a air flow sensor in the manifold and the later a maf at the air box
