Title: Phaeton in smash

This was a head on with a tree in Leicestershire at 60 -70 mph - 2004 V10. Driver had only broken leg - emergency services could not believe getting off so light. Look at passenger cabin - seems virtually untouched. He is buying another Phaeton.

Quote from driver:

"The fire brigade & paramedics were particularly surprised with regards to:

 1. How strong the car was, they were quite specific that had I been in most other vehicles I almost certainly would have had life threatening / fatal injuries.
 2. The way the car protected me going from dual carriageway speed to zero instantly without even cracking a rib, no internal injuries, and most importantly no spinal injuries whatsoever. They were amazed at the dual seat belt tensioners, seats, and the fact the dashboard, steering wheel and everything else hadn't moved a millimetre during the accident."

Looks more like a glancing blow TBH, judging by the damage, esp to the f/o/s. Looks like it's hit from the f/o/s then spun round, thus dissipating impact force. Any car hitting even a small tree (6" trunk) at 60 -70 squate head on will be much much worse than that, I know I've been to plenty car crashes.

The person who crashed into my fire engine last month was doing 30 ish, was a glancing blow, and the danage was worse than that. It was a Megane though!

Turns out he had been persuaded by friends to buy budget tyres :'( - he has vowed never to buy these again - Phaeton weighs about 2.5 tonnes

I'll never understand that.

£50,000 base price, much much more with the options specced.  Running costs to match.

Lets fit budget tyres, the only thing keeping the car in contact with the road.

Look how much tread depth there is on that picture too, practically brand new.

If he was in a lesser car it would most likely have been lethal if not life crippling, just to save money on cheap rubber.

On the other hand - drive to the limits of the tyres rather than the normal expected limits of the car ?

Seems he was driving to the speed limit.

Also most budgets are just plain dangerous in the wet, no matter how gentle you treat the car.

And then what about unforeseen circumstances, having to avoid an obstacle, aquaplaning hazard around a blind bend etc...
