Title: Astra query , anyone seen anything related to temperature gauge weirdness.???
Post by: MaxV6 on 01 February 2012, 16:09:43

this seems to be a common problem on Astras  as far as a bit of google implies, but as yet , i've not found the cause or cure.... so maybe one of you lot has already encountered and solved it.....

if the car is running,   and stationary,  all works as intended,  and the temp gauge indicates normally.....

the moment you drive off, or thereabouts.....  it drops to the bottom of the gauge , and stays there....  no matter what.....    until you park up on level ground,  and sit with the engine running for 10-15 minutes
..

at which point it works again.....

it's just had a new thermostat,  water pump,  cambelt,  temp sensor,  all filters, all fluids (oil , coolant, brake fluid, autobox fluid,  etc ) changed, etc etc....     and made no change to this behaviour...

any ideas chaps???

i would say that it looks like a case of the thermostat sticking open  :-\ but you say you have had a new stat  :-\  there was a fix  :-\ for this which entailed another thermostat and pipework being put somewhere else on the engine because although the stat's are inexpensive arent they positioned behind the cambelt or something so it costs a fortune to change the stat ?

The gauge may be controled via an ECU which is tucked up behind the front bumper on the passanges side, if you have been through some big puddles then it could be water has got to it.

I'd need a chassis/reg number to make sure yours has this ECU fitted, most did but some didn't.

The system works by having just one temp sensor in the head which feeds info the the cooling ECU which then feeds the engine ECU, Temp Gauge and the Rad Fans

Cheers
Andy
