http://www.sundayexpress.co.uk/posts/view/38935/Taxed-for-having-a-garage
do we get a reduction in our tax bill for having a shite view, i think not do you.

Once again, words fail. They need to raise more cash, as 'Mr Prudence' was a useless idiot. Still is, but has more power now.
-
So does that mean if we park our car in our garage or in our driveway we get a reduction in car tax ? I doubt it
This means it pays to knock down your garage, rip up your driveway and just park on the street.
This government has to go, and go now.

What an absolute f**king outrage, someone stick a device underneath this f**king goverment >:( >:( >:(
-
come back guy fawkes, all is forgiven :(
-
Great - a garage so big it needed planning permission and wonderful sprawling views of the hills to the front and fields to the back...
Guess im hit hard then.
Id go one further than saying this goverment needs to go - they should never have been voted in initially - simple as.
-
That's me well & truely stuffed then, big drive & a garage.
Well what a suprize. Brown, why don't you FOAD ASAP

WHat method though!
Slow, painful would be good.......
So my mother who lives in the Highlands (near and in line of sight of Skye) and recieves precious little in the way of amenities from the Government, is now going to be taxed for looking out the window!!!
Do you reckon she can claim a rebate for every day it's cloudy and can see break-all?
If you get more tax for a good view, and then could claim that in a very foggy & cloudy environment that the view is rarely any good, does that mean they can even consider taxing the weather?

This damm government would tax oxygen if it could find a way to charge for it.
I vote for locking the government in a garage with a gas guzzlers engine running. The garage can have an unbrealable window with a view of closed down factory.

Sorry folks --- I knjow we all hate council tax -- but that story is complete and utter b*ll*cks!
One -- we are all hounding Brown for it ( there are MANY other things he could be hung for, but this isn't one of them) -- Do we forget who brought the Council tax in ?? Anyone remember Maggie !!!!!
Two --- the council tax band, we are told, is based on the value of the house ( rightly or wrongly) so --- if you were buying a property you would pay more for a sea view and, yes, you would expect to pay less if you overlooked a cemetery. If I remember rightly the old rates system was based on the value of the property as well -- so what has really changed ??? .... oh, one thing has -- under rates, if you built an extension your rates bill went up straight away. Under Council Tax, it doesn't go up until the property is sold -- so I guess some of us could be better off.
Three -- the real gripe ( from where I stand) isn't the band -- but the amount the councils charge ( and waste on gold plated seats ).
Four -- all political parties are cr*p. More interested in self promotion and scoring cheap points than running the country to the benefit of it's citizens .......

I disagree - the reason they are having to find new ways to screw us is because that fat useless idiot now running the show has mismanaged the country's finances so badly over the last 10yrs.

Agreed, spend, spend, spend; always means tax, tax, tax. Labour will never learn.
Throwing away vast sums of the reserve in propping the economy up to avoid embarrassment caused by their own "F" ups and maintain the over-inflated "stability" they keep on about hasn't helped either. >:( >:( >:(

Throwing money at broken establishments - schools, nhs etc before fixing them has left us in this situation.

My point exactly; perhaps not made very clearly or as succinctly as you, granted.
Much of our "stability" has been brought about by the government just employing more and more people in the public sector in a very wasteful manner rather than making things more efficient.
I think we're in complete agreement sir. :y

Absolutley agree 100% here with TB :y its the labour party and its inability to manage an economy and it decade of financial mismanagent that has caused this.

We have strayed off the topic here -- I agree with all that has been said re the Current government -- but still feel they are all as bad!!!
But this thread was about the papers story on council tax -- it it THAT I was moaning about. Granted, this country is in the sh*t on many levels, but I was moaning about that particular story ( and the needless worry it causes) being b*ll*cks.

As long as they define a garage as something you can park a car in then many houses won't be affected. Cars are getting bigger every generation, and garages have shrunk.
I'm busy looking at getting an extension to my house and the council would only grant planning permission if I took up half my lawn and agreed to providing two off-street parking spaces. The 23ft garage I'm looking ot build won't count...
Can't wait for the tax bill to come through the door...

The way I see it is ss things stand at the moment they can't increase your council tax banding for an extension you have built - including garages -- it will be reviewed when you sell --- unless they change the rules !!!!
What the paper says is rubbish -- they can only do what the law says they can do ( conservative law BTW)

I think that is the point - they are going to reband anyway (easy enough for them to get any required laws through)
-
No -- they are not going to reband for a while -- General Election a couple of years off -- that would be political suicide -- they haven't got the balls!
-
Brown & co are so worried about protecting their necks they have abolished the death sentence for traitors - as they could be strung up for it

Did you realise that about £180 of your annual council tax bill is used to provide index linked final salary pensions to civil servants who can retire at 60, yet we must work until 65 and pay for our own pensions ? An 82 year old British pensioner with-held that amount from his bill and was jailed for 7 days, he had worked and paid tax all of his life. That paedo the Aussies have dumped on us has paid nothing but is to receive everything. Vote labour!!! Did you know that police officers can retire after 30 years of service, many retire on good pensions at 50 years of age, leaving us mere taxpayers to fund their retirement and pay to replace them with another officer!!!! The public service unions are bankrolling the cash strapped Labour party and get everything they want. We will shortly have a massive uprising in this country as nobody in power gives a damn about the hardworking taxpaying family man/woman.
Rant not over, I've just joined the BNP, they are not what they are portrayed to be. If the conception is that they are just racists, why is the Black Police Federation allowed to exist? Racist or what ? Imagine the uproar if a White Police federation was formed. The MOBO awards, Music of Black Origin- why can't we have MOWO awards. If I like the music I don't care who makes it, it should be judged on quality not colour. The taxpayer is taken for granted ( and for a ride ) by this government and will continue to be taxed ever more heavily until we say enough. If any of you live in an area where local elections are taking place mention the massive increase in direct and indirect taxation and promise not to vote labour, the message must get through.

Ref the highlighted part, emphatically NOT TRUE. The contract I have says I pay 11% of my top line each and every pay day since the first one. The monies deducted from my wages today go to pay the current Police pensioners tomorrow. Literally! There is no great fund or pot of gold languishing anywhere accruing interest.... Morever, not one brass razzoo gets added to the monies drawn from my payline to pay the pensioners by the Government....
Yes, I can retire after 30 years service (the new contracts are 35 years, BTW) and I will be happy to see it!
The new Officerwho will be replacing me will save the taxpayer money as they will be on a starting rate rather than the rate I am on after the various pay grades etc that apply after years served.
Whats more, successive Governments have eroded the value of an Officers wage, administration after administration. They insist that hard fought allowances are disolved into that years pay rise, otherwise no pay rise. Last of which, last years pay increase was going to be disallowed. Good, I hear you say. After the last thread of a strike (which we are not allowed to do, by law, unlike 99.9% of others) an everlasting agreement was made restricting subsequent rises to the annual cost of living index, nothing more, effectively pinning the pound for pound purchase value at late 1980's values...
No problems with you having a rant, just please ensure that the 'facts' you quote are real facts and not simply bar room myths.... :y
/rant... :D

I would say the same about the first part of that statement -- £180 of council tax bill going toward civil servants pensions !!! Council tax revenue goes to the council who coolect it --- civil servants don't work for councils. Therfore they don't get payrolled by any monies paid in council tax.
This illustrates my first reply in this thread -- the public are being grossly mis-informed by papers who are hell bent on spreading cr*p
-

I had a look around about this - it can be awarded to anyone - the source music is basically black people music but anyone influenced can do it.
BTW Blues started as a black American music form

this government has forgot where its roots started, in a blood bath in manchester so all folks could vote, and soon we should take a leaf from the french and stick together, down tools for a day or 2, we put them there and they dont listen to us, soon ill have to pay to drive around manchester, just to go home and to work. sick of being taxed for anything and everything i do, fu.......k them

Whilst I fully accept that you will have better access to information than myself, I am not quoting bar room banter. I was in the job, albeit briefly and some time ago, I still regularly socialise with mates who have either just retired ( at 49 one of them ) or are still doing it. The retired lads could not wait to retire and 2 of them have been re-employed by Durham Constabulary as civilians, one as a dog trainer and one as a driving instructor, so in effect they are receiving 2 lots of public money and their replacement police officer still has to be funded. Our local police station which is a very large building, complete with cells etc is manned by civilian security guards, closed at 1800 hours and all weekend. No local police office. Would not those senior retired officers be better equipped and qualified to staff it? There cannot possibily be a shortage of officers as 22000 of them took the day off to march in London. Money is not an issue either, the Home Office is spending record amounts on the Police service. I believe an asst. Chief Constable is on around £122000 a year, £10k a month. Starting salary of about £23k is hardly shabby. The lads I know all live on the best housing estates and drive good cars, I really can't see any erosion in their lives. The police precept in my council tax bill has gone up 5% this year, last year IIRC it was 19%, the biggest increase within the bill. Don't get me wrong, if I had been allowed to continue in the job I would probably have had the same opinion as you, I also applaud the strength of feeling shown by the demonstration, what we need now is a taxpayers demonstration, to highlight our feelings. There is a terrific amount of public money wasted by inefficient practices. If someone is arrested here in Chester-le-street, thet are taken to Peterlee for detention, 12 miles away, despite there being cells here. The cells are closed due to the Elf nSafety Gestapo rules, this also means 2 officers are taken from the streets, fuel and vehicle used and their services lost for 2 hours while processing the detained person.
Rant over - lets talk cars. Also I meant the local council employees, not civil servants.

The MOBO awards, Music of Black Origin- why can't we have MOWO awards. If I like the music I don't care who makes it, it should be judged on quality not colour.
I had a look around about this - it can be awarded to anyone - the source music is basically black people music but anyone influenced can do it.
BTW Blues started as a black American music form
Yes and I like quite a lot of it, but you try and start a system called MUSIC OF WHITE ORIGIN, you would be villifed as a racist. Good music by any one will always rise to the top.

Theowletman - I'm not going to enter into a great discussion here other than to state a couple of facts in order to allow you to get a better handle on things... yes, I have first hand access to the info, not memories from some time ago or dissallusion info from those recently retired.
Remember, Police pensions after 30 years are simply the Officer getting their OWN money back, nothing from the taxpayer whatsoever.
Yes, Poll Tax/Community Charge rates are rising. In order to reduce the Police bill portion, Officer posts are being civilianised rather than pay a trained Officer to sit at a desk or drive a car - look at the number of HATO's (not employed by the Police, BTW) on the road instead of Trafpol..... In order to reduce training costs, retired Officers are re-employed at civilian rates to to the job that has previously been done by an Officer. This creates a wage saving as less is paid to do the same job. Remember, the cop on pension is only getting his own cash back.... That makes it ONE lot of public money, and a reduced one at that, not the TWO you seem to be fixated on.
As to the Police who recently demonstrated, they were on days off, out of uniform, other than those working who were employed to Police the demonstration in the same way they would have to Police any other march.
There was a substantial influx of Officers in the mid/late 1970's as a result of a substantial wage increase then which only put Officers wages back into line with others. Those officers are now at the end of their 30 year time and are retiring. Fact - some 60% of Officers serving in the UK will retire between 2006 and 2009 as a result of the recruiting in the 70's. Some jobs will have to be civilianised in order to ensure that there is still someone there to do them....
I will not answer anymore on this thread. I've said my piece.

Fair enough, that is what civilised discussion is about, 2 people with different opinions stating those opinions, the service the public receive could be a lot better, taking into account the massive increase in the Home Office budget, As it happens it was in the seventies that I entered Durham, 1976 to be precise. Didn't think the money was that good though.
The End.
