How is it that a 1998 2.0l GLS Omega estate costs more to insure that an 05 Megane cabriolet, I understand Cars have insurance groups, but how does this fit with values, seemingly not...... :-\ :-\ :-\
-
Probably because Meganes are shiiiiite, are worth about £200, which admittedly is probably double the migs value, and will disintegrate on impact leaving no damage whatsoever to anything else.
Ah, the realisation. You don't own a Megane by any chance?
A Megane crashed into the fire engine I was driving about 2 months ago. Ruined the front end. I mean RUINED.

I am surprised this post did not get more replies http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=99308.0
There seems to be moves afoot by the insurance companies to heavily load older vehicles. I thought a member on here worked for an insurance company. perhaps they could fill us in with what is happening.

I was quoted £20 less on a fiesta than my omega. which was just a 1.2l. Can't work it out myself

I believe that insurance companies see older vehicles as more of a risk because the owner is less likely to care about them than what they would a car that is worth something.
For example, we have a 98 Beemer 318 iS that is realistically worth no more than £1500 (and it's only possibly worth that because it's 1 owner from new with 48K on the clock and FSH). We paid £600 for it last year and have grown somewhat attached to it, primarily because of it's reliability and the fact it's still worth spending at least £500 on it without question if there is a major component failure somewhere.
While I'd be a tad pissed at losing a decent car if it were to get smashed or stolen, we're not gonna shed any tears over it like we would a car that was worth (say) £5K.
That doesn't mean to say that we drive with any less attention to what is going on, nor do we walk away without ensuring it is fully secure when we leave it.....but the insurance company has no way of knowing that so I guess they have to price based on what the statistics tell them is the "likely" scenario.
Obviously not a fair basis at all for the most of us, but I don't see what we can do as they have us by the short & curlies (and they know it).

Basically once a car is cheap enough to be owned by the local chavtastic population and is being crashed into everything in sight while drunk, high and with the drivers seat reclined so far that all they can see is the headlining, insurance prices start going up for everyone else ;D
I've also found, a couple of times, that FC is cheaper than TPF&T (presumably for the same reason - people who don't care will only bother with TPF&T)
