Post by: bighed on 25 March 2008, 19:57:57
Can someone let me know what the plans are for "gas guzzlers" on road tax? Looking at getting a V6 2.5 estate. R-Vreg  :)

Don't know the full facts yet but from what ive seen on the forum March 2001 seems like the cut off point. Pre March 2001 ok Post March 2001 stuffed! Don't take it as read cause i'm sure someone will be along shortly to confirm/deny.

R-V reg won't be classified by CO2 emissions so should be a safe bet - for now.

L-V reg will not be affected by the high road tax increase. All vehicles registared before March 2001 are as follows:

The cost of vehicle tax for cars, motorcycles, light goods vehicles and trade licences
Calculate the cost of vehicle tax for your vehicle using the tables below. The tables contain the rates of vehicle tax for the different tax classes, together with tax class (TC) codes to distinguish them.

The rates shown apply to tax discs taken out from 13 March 2008.

.. and in addition to above, all cars registered after 2001 get completely rebanded in 2009, so any V6 post- 1st March 2001 Omega bar a 2.6 manual saloon will be 440 quid in 2009 and 455 in 2010. :o

2.2s and 2.6 manuals will be in the band below, still 400 + IIRC.

I have done a bit of searching for a replacement for the wife's Volvo and was looking at an Astra, well heres the Astra emissions

1.7 diesel manual 127g
1.6 petrol manual 197g auto 200g
1.8 petrol manual 190g auto 202g
2.2 petrol manual 202g auto 207g

This has to be the most unfair way to tax cars ever. I mean the amount of soot and rubbish that comes out of diesels and they will pay the least amount of tax, and will probably do more miles than average as well.
