I own a vauxhall omega 3.2 v6 automatic 2002. The gear ratios are 2.4, 1.48, 1, 0.72.
I was wondering if it would be possible to make 1st and 2nd gear ratio slightly higher or lower (which ever way it is), say, 3.2, 1.9, 1, 0.72.
This would increase the acceleration and the 3rd and 4th gears remaining the same would allow me to keep the fuel economy as before at cruising speed (40+).
I would like to know anyones advice on this and around how much something like this would cost.
Would the gearbox ecu have to be changed?
Thanks guys.

Why would you want a faster 0 to 60?
Are you thinking of racing it?
-
convert it to a manual ;D

Yep, by far the best suggestion. I think it's very unlikely that you'd find the bits to modify the auto gearbox and you'd then end up with an ECU that doesn't match the ratios, etc. Non starter, IMHO.
-
No i'm not thinking of racing it. It would just suit my driving style better, I'd prefer it to get to 60 a bit faster but i also love the automatic ease.
I fig if people are spending rediculous amounts of money (Rediculous because i haven't got it) ;) like thousands to end up with a car that will do the 60 dash quicker via turbo, nos, v8, etc. A modded box would be the best choice for me as The car will remain largely the same.
Ok........... So the ECU would have to be modded as well. Any way of doing this?

Hit the "S" button then :)

What ratio dif is fitted to your car ?

That's not going to help if you've already got your foot welded to the floor, though, is it?

Just fit a lower geared dif. 3.9 to 4.2 is lowest available stock. If that not enough, maybe a member here can re gear it lower again.

Is this the final drive? Do you know how much of an incease in acceleration would be. That would have the engine reving much higher all ound wouldn't it? Less engine life more petrol. But yes I would be very interested in the diff you suggested if i had more info. est performance figures, etc.

autoboxes dont lock up till 80 km/hr.. so its like pressing the clutch pedal while accelerating.. convert to manual ..
-
What exactly is the 4.2 diff?
What does it do?
My car is standard so i guess its the 3.9 diff that it is fitted with.

Think of it as a bigger sprocket on a chain set on the back wheel of a push bike. The bigger the sprocket equates to easier pedalling, but you need more turns of you feet for a revolution of the back wheel, the smaller the sprocket is harder to accelerate with but gives you more speed for a given number of revolutions of your feet.
Diff ratio of 4.2:1 or 3.9:1 means 4.2 or 3.9 revolutions of your prop shaft for 1 rev of the axle/halfshaft.

this should help... it was forwarded to me for a similar query..
im using it to modify diff gear ratios in my 3.0 manual with a 3.9 diff,
im changing mine to a 3.45 but i have a manual gearbox..
-
Having driven a 3.2 ex-plod, which i think has 4.2 diff? (it was LSD) - Its considerably quicker off the mark, but at the expense of top end speed.

Yep my ex plod 3.0 with a 3.9 lsd is just like that flys like hell upto 130 but then looses power upto 145 takes ages... thats why im fitting a 3.45 to give me better topend & lower rpm at 60 70 mph

a change to the rear axle (diff) ratio will affect the whole car. Sure, it'll make it accelerate better, but it affects third and top just the same. Higher revving, more fuel, etc.
To answer the original question, there is no way to alter the gearbox internal ratios. This would be a physical change to the gears, for which parts are not available.
sorry.

or buy a car that has quicker 0-60 ;D
