Title: The Estate Story So far... Ok, who stole my boost?
Post by: P6UL K on 16 February 2012, 03:22:15
Some of you may have seen some random posts about my recent purchase - Zirks/Twiglets old 2.5TD Estate....

Picked it up a few weeks ago as a do'er upper and was going to keep her as a runaround but i have now decided to sell her on when i've sorted the final few niggles.

After a comprehensive full service and some general TLC i managed to get my first drive in her tonight after the dreaded MOT, tax and swapping my insurance over i went off to work not sure what to expect as she has - by all accounts sat around for a fair while since Chris had used her.

Poodled between my house and the M25, down the slip gathering speed thinking the turbo will come in any second.... And nothing, change gear, lag, lag, lag and some more lag but no sign of any boost!  :-\  Reminded me of driving an old non-turbo Escort van i used to have years ago, i was quite disappointed TBH.

So this leads me to, what should i be checking?  I'll get the car scanned tomorrow to get any fault codes to see if they can pin point any issues, but there literially is NO boost - I'll even tap in a boost gauge i have to see whats readings i can get from there to compare against what it should be getting.

Very odd.

Hi Paul best thing to do is go under the car and have a feel about the turbo
You should be looking/feeling for the small rod that connects the watsegate valve to the vac solinoid.
Make sure it moves as ive seen these seizing it will be hard to move I use a long screw driver and also make sure its attached.
The other thing to do is take the turbo inlet hose off and feel for play in the turbo impeller and its spinning freely.
I adjusted the small rod on my TD by screwing the adjuster nut in by a couple of turns this allowed the turbo to start boosting about 1100 rpm.
Don't go daft and screw it wright in or you will end up overspeeding the engine and wheel spin in every gear others on here have done it  ::)

Paul,

It might also be worth mentioning what work you have carried out on the car, and what you've had apart, just in case you have disturbed something.

Admittedly, I only tyook the car up the road and back when I collected it from Zirk, but I wasn't aware of a lack of boost at that point.  She seemed to pull pretty well, and would certainly have tramped all over an old Escort van, that's for sure.  :-\

Good point, but i can't see that i would of disturbed anything...

Since collection from Twiggy i have replaced:

Front discs & pads
Rear discs & pads
Front & rear springs
Oil
Oil filter
Fuel filter
Air filter
Anti-Freeze flush and renewal
Front & rear windscreen wipers
Front drop links
Replace glo-plugs (which involved removing the inlet manifold)
Removed EGR pipe and capped off with plates.

What are the PFL cars like for code reading?  There is no EML illuminated  ???  So would this mean there isn't necessarily anyhting wrong?

Surely the car should pull like a train and not a horse and cart?

Check the inlet pipe that goes onto the turbo  :y

I had one pop off many moons ago with exactly the same simptoms  ;)

I'll pop out and check all the boost hoses now, but there wasn't any loss of boost noise like i would expect to hear?

Well after stopping off at my local garage for tea and car talk, i managed to get my mate to have a quick look and he took it out for a test drive to which he agreed it was very under powered.....

I left him to it and have just been back and collected the car and on first impressions it seems a lot better, my journey to work will be the ultimate test later tonight but he said it was an easy fix and refused to tell me what the issue was, although he did mention a vacumn pipe that had a ball bearing stuck in the end of it  ::)

Anyway, so far so good.... I'll see for sure later on.

And these were the fault codes thrown up:

44      Incorrect Boost Pressure
64      Fuel Quantity Control Out of Range

 ???

I was going to post this earlier but got distracted by work - MAP sensor..

I'll bet it was the hose to the MAP sensor ;)

Chris all sorted mate, seems to pull much better now... I bought a 1 litre Diesel Redex, filled the new filter up as you said and fitted it, put the rest in the tank.... Goes well  :y

Cheers for the advice and popping over!  8)
