Title: Burning plastic smell
Post by: SMD on 19 February 2012, 12:13:06
I get the smell of burning/melting plastic when I get out of the car coming from the engine bay. But when I look inside while standing from the front I can't smell it. It doesn't smell like oil and I don't think its the cam covers. Could be the powersounder but its connected and doesn't beep.

Anyone experienced this?

I had this happen to me and was convinced the car was burning or about to burst into flames ... turned out i had a carrier bag wrapped around the cat/exhaust .
It reeked for weeks untill all that plastic had melted away .
Have a look underneath incase youve picked up a carrier bag .
Its a long shot but worth a look :-\ :y

Cam Covers will more likely smoke before they smell, get rid of the power sounder now rather than later, just in case.

Mine is doing the same, smells like Pikeys are burning cable insulation off the wiring under the bonnet before weighing it in! ;D ;D
With mine, it is leaking cam cover at the rear from the half moons! :(

I would put money on the cam covers. I had them fail at around 90k miles and it smelled nasty. I think the oil burns off giving the burning smell. It did in my case anyway.

They are now leaking again (just hit 182k miles) and I have the same nasty burning smell again.
