I have not been sure whether my thermostat is stuck open for a while so today I tried the running the engine from cold to see if the top hose stayed cold until the temperature gauge came up to normal. It certainly didnt heat up from the start but did heat up after about 5 mins but the gauge had hardly registered. The hose to the header tank warmed up and so did the heater hoses without the air con on . I noticed that under the header tank there is a pump? which I assume was running as the heater hoses had heated up or does this run all the time? I am not too clear on the water circuits on the car.

Hi,
I had a problem with my stat stuck open last weekend and eventually had it replaced....
My temp gauge wouldn't move at all and I had hardly any heating........ If I turned the heating off and just ran the car on tick over, the temp gauge eventually rose to normal.
Since stat was replaced, the heating is nice and hot and temp gauge reaches normal within ten mins......
Not sure if this helps but just wanted to mention the symptoms I had with an open Thermostat.
Cheers, :y

Thermostat stuck open IMHO ... doing that check what SHOULD happen is the pipe stays cold until a sudden sharp burst of HOT water, not warm, as the thermostat opens on reaching temperature .. around 85 ish I think .. which is HOT not warm. What you are feeling is a slow and steady attempt to heat the whole system, when all that should be getting hot, initially, is the engine "jacket" - which includes the heater hoses. As the temp guage sender is inside that loop it should register 85 ish before you feel anything at the pipe.

This must be a chatching fault as mine has also had a strange heat up time recently and wondered if its time for a new stat.
Car takes arond 10 mins normal driving or 7-8 miles before temp gauge start to get around the 90 degree mark..but this is a M/Facelift so mid point is 95.Do get warm air through heater, but this gets much hotter after say 15 miles or around 20 mins driving when gauge register mid point (95) which would seem normal. After an hour or so stop and cool down temp behaves normal and warms up within short time or mileage.
However today gauge didn,t get above 90 degrees for atleast 20 miles although warm air available through heater.
Have tried the top hose test from cold and sure it does get hot but don,t think it is a surge..more like a progressive increase so image my stat is getting lazy .
