Title: 2.5 TD Engine. Possible missing pipe, whoosh noise, and poor servo assistance

Sorry - pinched someone's pic here

This item in the pic, I think it's part of the EGR Setup. There is a pipe coming from the far passenger side of this, however a little further in, directly above the top rad hose, there is another connection that looks like it should have a pipe on it - and doesn't? It seems to be spraying a little engine oil onto the top rad hose over time, too....

Not sure if related or not..

The brake pedal feels 'hard' as if there isn't much/any servo assistance

When 'on the turbo' there is a whoosh noise from the engine bay, as if there's air escaping.

Although I could strip and rebuild a petrol in my sleep, I am a complete tractor novice, and I know absolutely nothing about them, so please treat me as such! :y

Don't you block the EGR off on the TD's for better performance?  :-\

Probably more likely for better reliability  :D But either way, that would probably still leave a missing vaccum pipe...

Cheers Rob. It looks like the offending item is the EGR vaccum pump... just need to work out where the missing pipe is supposed to go!!

That'll be my pic ;)

IIRC the vac pump is up front and the initial vac connection is under the black plastic plenum cover thing, and runs straight back along the valley of the plenum toward the brake servo.

A connection sprouts from that about half way down and goes to the passenger side inner wing where the solenoid for the EGR is, and then on from that to the EGR valve (in the photo) itself.

There should also be a little pipe sprouting from the underside of the plenum (RHS, about 1/3rd of the way back from the throttle body) which goes straight to the MAP sensor on the inner wing (1" black cube with a single port and electrical connector). Often mixed up with the EGR solenoid, it seems.

This is where it looks like there is a pipe missing, and a little oil spraying onto the rad hose from here:

Thing is, I can't find anywhere where there should be a pipe attached, anywhere else... although, there is what looks like an old see through fuel filter near the passenger wing, which seems to just vent to atmosphere... pretty sure that's not right  :-\

Cheers chaps :y

The vac pipe your looking for attaches the a servo that sits beside or just below the ecu behind/beside power steering bottle.
The small inline filter is for the egr vac system if you follow the pipe from this you will find the servo at the other end.
Make sure the pipes are clear and clean them one at a time because if you put them on arse for tit the car won't run to well
Also if you feel under the inlet manifold between num3-4 you will find a small pipe sticking out this also goes to the servo beside the ecu and theres a T peice that then splits the vac pipe to the HBV and then goes to the brake servo.
The brake servo is mechanicly drive as Diesels can't create a vacuum.
The wooshing sound your getting I would suspect the EGR pipe has split at the exhaust around the turbo area (there known for splitting here)just use a 10p as a plug in both ends.
as for the oil check that the plastic pipe with turbo diesel on it hasn't split.

cheers, so are you saying my vacpipe between the egr and the inline filter thing is missing?

The inline filter should have a pipe to atmosphere and another going to servo around about the ecu area( mind theres 2 servos there don't mix the pipes up ) then the pipe leaves the servo and then goes to the egr (Injector spill pipe works as a vac pipe).
Personaly I would just blank the egr off at both ends .

ta. So are we any closer to identifying what pipe is missing from the egr vacuum device? Its from this connection, that a little oil is spraying... Surely it should have a pipe on?

My TD only had one pipe outlet on the EGR valve, I think later ones have two and the inner one is left free to air - though given the crap coming out of it, I wonder if a diaphragm or seal has blown in the EGR valve and you're blowing boost straight out of that hole. That would explain the whooshing noise.

I have a couple of believed good EGR valves here, you're welcome to one of them for the cost of postage :)
