Driving back from Luton Airport down the M1 at 1.45pm today. Approaching Junction 4 to Edgware, I move into lane 1 ready to turn off. Still doing around 50-60 in relatively light traffic. In lane 3 a van with a trailer is hacking along at 70+, about 2-300 yards ahead.
Next minute, from the open trailer, out pops a tyre which then bounces across the lanes and starts heading up lane 1 towards me! Braking hard, and looking into my mirror as I had just passed another van/trailer combo, I thought "Do I go on the hard shoulder, or move into lane 2?". I decided to wait another second or two and the tyre lost momentum and fell sideways onto the hard shoulder (but still right next to lane 1). A quick flick of the steering and I am safely past. Phew! :o :o
A close shave, but I'm rather proud of the fact that I didn't panic and had the foresight to leave it until the last millisecond to see which way the tyre chose to go. Had I gone on the hard shoulder it could have been very nasty indeed!
Reported to Highways Agency when I got home 10 minutes later. :y

Very lucky indeed , once my rear wheel came off my MK5 cortina ...bounced over the top of my car and just missed an old lady walking her dog :o I ran over and said sorry , put the wheel back on and went on my way :-[

Don't forget to change your underwear.
