After spending the last year driving my 3.2 MV6, I've taken it off the road for repairs, and have been running around in a 2.5TD all week.
What is it about these cars? It's a pre-facelift cdx with the awful old CDX alloys, white cloth/beige interior, has the odd issue and is not particularly 'quick' off the mark... but I absoluitely love it!!! I love the sound of the S6 diesel, it sounds really, really nice, especially lower revs..

Single word. Thrashability.

I can tell you what it is about the DTi for me.... 550 - 600 miles out of a tankful of fuel as opposed to 300 in the V6 :y
Oh and with a manual box you can keep the Turbo on song when you want too.... ::)

torque

torque
Not sure if it's my (potential) boost leak, or whatever's causing the loud whoosh noise when the turbo spins.... but it doesn't feel all that torquey....

Well pulling the caravan with our estate is effortless.....

It will be, even without a turbo there's bags of torque, way more than a petrol at those revs

Auto TD manages around 450 to a tank IME. Chipped, obviously, as the thing is unusable in standard GM form.

Auto The wrong gearbox fitted to a TD manages around 450 to a tank IME. Chipped, obviously, as the thing is unusable in standard GM form.
Fixed that for you

Absolutely. In every single way, the auto is wrong for the TD. The auto is great in the V6 petrols, but simply does not suit the BMW lump. Not idea how the DTi would fair with an auto, as we never got the chance to try one.

Was just thinking about the 2.5DTi and the idea Josh had of importing one over from their homeland...

Suspect its got quite a narrow power range, thus the 5 speed box...

Needs decatting and chipping then!
Decatting becomes slightly more of a pain come April...
-
Decatting by gutting the innards of the Cat then welding the lid back on gets around that.... :-X

Would there be any gain to de-catting the BMW lump, in the same way?, when it's chipped?

about 4bhp... Easiest performance boosts on the TD are the chipping and blanking the egr... I looked into de-catting the cat, but, found that the performance increase was minimal...
When I had the whoosing sound that you describe, it was the pipe had blown off the hard plastic turbo diesel piping at the front, but sounded like there was a blow in the exhaust too (when the bonnet was down)... Broken EGR pipe is very noticible with the engine running and the bonnet open, also a huge loss of power and not a whoosing noise (just alot of noise), a cracked egr gave a hiss...
