Karen Carpenter for me, whats yours?

To be honest for quality of voice you cant beat Adele and dont get me wrong I hate the way she talks but I think her songs are fantastic, puts the hairs up on the back of my neck everytime I hear her live.
I also respect her for shunning those crap factor programmes. Apparently her mother she that she should go on because her voice was so much better than anything on the show but she said no, that programme is not for true artists.

Adelle

A singer I really like is Nina Persson, of the Cardigans - she just has a lovely, soft, distinctive voice:

And she's damn sexy as well 8)

Hazel O'connor! Her stuff is hauntingly different at times. We've seen her live loads of times and chatted with her each time. She's pure raw talent, not manufactured and manipulated crap. Writes most of her own stuff too.

There are many really-depends on genre again like other discussions about "best" drummers or "best" guitar player-but some favourites include Adele, Billie Holiday, Mary Black and Irma Thomas :y
-
Cant believe Alison Moyet has not been mentioned ;)
-
Dusty Springfield... :y
-
Dont think Aretha Franklin has been mentioned yet either. ::)
-
orrrrrr Nelly Furtado :-* :-* :-* :-* mmmmmmmm oh arrrr missus
-
a collection of "different" unique talents.... each with their own thing going on.... all great , for different reasons.
note, this is irrespective of what i may or may not think of the material.... this is about singers that have performed at a level few can dream of, and have made every performance very much their own....
very few of them would pass for a decent quality classical singer.... but i don;t think that was what we're talking about.
the ability to send a shiver down your spine with just their voice THAT is what i'm talking about
Amy Lee ( evanescence )
Whitney Houston
Tina Turner
Kate Bush (not a joke)
Beyonce
Madonna
Janis Joplin
Emmylou Harris
Mariah Carey
Debbie Harry
Annie Lennox
Aretha Franklin
Stevie Nicks
Adele
Cerys Matthews
there are reasons for leaving such luminaries as Bonnie Raitt out... she's a guitarist that sings in my view.... and her playing is such that it stands on it's own.... her singing is merely very good.... not genre defining, but her playing is masterful....
-
Phantom of the opera Sarah Brightman shivers cold sweat pulpitations yum yum
-
Dusty Springfield... :y
Good call! Dont know how I forgot her but Etta James should be up there too surely and Joss Stone may be another one. And what about Ella Fitzgerald or Bessie Smith?Guess when you think of it there are more than just a few to consider ;D
-
I always liked Sade.
-
Personal favorites of mine include, in no perticular order
Adele (great now and if she looks after her voice, she will get evan better)
That blonde bird out of ABBA who wore the spandex :D :D (can't remember her name) ;D
Alison Moyet
Amy Lee (Evinesence)
Karen Carpenter
Eva Cassidy
Annie Lennox
Beverley Craven
-

Some listed are clearly talented singers, but have a voice like cheese wire through one ear and out the other. Much pain to be endured. Whitney and that lass from Evanescence be joint top of that list. Ouch.
