Title: Shaving
Post by: Jimbob on 26 February 2012, 13:08:24
I'm about to change shaving methods again...

I started with Gillette razors, and seem to alternate their current razor with an electric shaver, using top of the range shavers from Phillips, Braun, and lastly Panasonic (which was the best I'd used).  Until my face gets fed up, or shaver wears out and I change again.

Currently on Gillette Fusion...but my skin has had enough and its time for a change.

Fancying a go at a traditional Double Edge razor, and blade selection such as :
http://connaughtshaving.com/merkur33c.html
http://connaughtshaving.com/popular.html
Not too sure on getting a cream and brush...so sticking to gel for the moment.  Much reduces initial outlay, may have a go depending on how I get on.

Everyone who uses a DE system seems to be a real fan and wont consider anything else.

Seems to be a better shave, and huge cost saving compared to cartridge razors.

Anyone else use this method....any advice?

any advice?

Buy plasters in bulk?

(I jest - never been brave enough to try a traditional razor.. have had the odd professional shave done with a cutthroat - brilliant, if a little scary!)

I stick to running a pair of clippers over mine every few days, but then I don't need to stop anywhere as the hair on my head is just as short non-existant. ;D

Always fancied a cut throat shave...never got around to it though.

Good point though, will add a styptic pencil to the order.

Use to use one of those in my teens, made a right mess of my face and ended up getting rashes, so moved on to electric shavers, strange thing is now, many moons later, electric bring me out in a rash, so now I only wet shave, when I can be bothered, tried most, now generally only use Bic Disposables, the Orange Sensitive type, and Gel, works for me.

A tip I was given years ago from a Barber is not to use Hot or Cold water when Wet Shaving, only luke warm?

I find it helps to wash and lather beard thoroughly first to soften the bristles, keep beard wet, apply foam, then shave with the grain loosely.

Then wet hands and use the remainder of foam on face to rub in/re lather and re shave against the grain finally.

Still can't shave every day though. Gillette sensor turbo(?) seems to suit me best. I have the orange fusion ones currently which don't seem as good. Although I think the orange blades are a cheaper spec than came with the fusion I bought. :-\

Can't get on with electric shavers. Too many lay flat bristles and seem to sting and pull more.

Have you tried a braun series 3 ?

Its my current leccy shaver.....designed for people who dont shave everyday and its waterproof, so can be used in the shower if you wish.....i find it doesnt pull hairs even if i havent shaved for a few days.....however it probably takes slightly longer to shave than most leccy shavers as you sometimes have to go over the same area several times to get a smooth shave  :y

Last foil razor I had wasn't any better, and the foil broke and cut me chin. Although it wasn't a Braun. Pillishave no better. Not sure it's worth the expense of trying a third electric razor tbh. :-\

Just use ordinary liquid soap in a pump dispenser from your local Supermarket & a double blade razor from a fair to middling manufacturer Jimbob! No need to spend a fortune on Gillette or shaving foams, balms etc! But steer clear of the 10 for a £1 jobbies unless you're after a remake of Sweeney Todd! ;D :y

I've been wet shaving for 30 years, i've tried dry shaving with electric razors but just don't feel like i've had a good close shave. I've been using one of those Gillette wet razors with the single AA battery and Gel for the last 3 years or so and it works well for me

I also hate shaving with a passion. Before I retired it was every evening or morning depending on whether or not I had an early start, always a wet shave, can't get on with electric shavers never a close shave and they tend to pull the hair. If I shaved every day with sensitive foam and a good razor using an aftershave soothing balm my skin was fine. Leave it a day or two and I used to get an awful neck rash.

Nowadays I wet shave once or twice a week, once when my beard starts to itch or twice if I'm going out, using Nivea Sensative Gel, a Gillette Pro Glide razor, and Clinique Happy After Shave Balm. Nice clean smooth shave. :y :y

I have a mate who shaves two three times a day and still has a five o'clock shadow  ;D ;D ;D

cant use electric shavers , my skin dont like them ..  using latest gilette razors but only after a hot shower so my skin becomes softer.. and 3 times a week not more  ;D

ps: hair creams makes a better surface for shaving than foams imo.. :P

Much as I prefer wet shaving - One of those electric Gilette Fusion things and sensitive shaving gel - I have had to get a decent electric razor for convenience. I do tend to have a wet shave when going out as the electric just doesn't feel close enough

Bar of soap, brush, lukewarm water. Any old multiblade razor. Best combo I've used, and I can grow my sideburns in twenty minutes if I put my mind to it ;)

You can't beat the turkish barbers, cut throat razors, facial waxing, singe the hairin your earholes, you will never get a better shave than this, and all for about ten quid.
The only downside is,Marmaris is four and a half hours flying time away.

Electric razors give me one hell of a rash, so wet shave every day.

I've been using Asda's own triple blade razors with gillette gel for some years now and does the job :y

the best I ever had was in Isparta, probably an old Greek immigrant or Armenian not sure,  he heats your face with steamed towel , then creams your face, heats again and uses cut throat razors, but I nearly fall into sleep ;D

Before I retired it was every evening or morning depending on whether or not I had an early start, always a wet shave, can't get on with electric shavers never a close shave and they tend to pull the hair. If I shaved every day with sensitive foam and a good razor using an aftershave soothing balm my skin was fine. Leave it a day or two and I used to get an awful neck rash.....
Thats why I grew my beard.  Easier to give it a shearing once a week to keep it tidy but now I'm 'retired' it gets it once every 3 or 4 weeks.  Last year, I let it go for about 4 months.  Alongwith the hair.

think alot of t cutting to get rid of all the imperfections first ljay  ;D ;D

Far too gentle, need somat a bit more abrasive....wet and dry maybe?  Or a sander? Then polish till smooth! ;) :y

The words "cutting" & "abrasive" should NEVER be used in the same sentence as any reference to a gentlmans undercarraige!!

Ahh sensitive is it??? ;D ;D ;D ;D

Just a little itchy
