or do you mean the heatshields that are permanently attached to the exhaust downpipes? (one on each downpipe)
or do you mean the heatshields bolted top and bottom of the exhaust manifolds (two each side/manifold).
On my 1994 V6 the manifold heatshields rotted away first and I replaced them when I changed the headgaskets.
The heatshields on the downpipes disintegrated and fell off at about 190,000 miles. I bought some exhaust wrap to try to contain the heat but never got round to fitting it and the heat didn't seem to do any harm.....
I think the big heatshields are stainless steel, I can't imagine them rusting and falling off. I did have one fixing stud shear off when I adjusted the handbrake cable but there are so many fixings it didn't seem to matter....
looking at the piece of pipe it looks like one of the exhaust downpipe ones. Ive been told that if i try to remove the peg its attached to i might end up with a tiny hole in the actual floor. Cos if its rusted its more than likely the peg will be (thus being a PITA to remove). I think i might leave it be. it didnt seem to effect the car on the way back home.
looks like one short piece has come off one side, it was a right mess (rust)so i will get them all checked out and replaced if needed. Thanks again for replying
