Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Anyone used a Navigon Satnav?
« on: 09 February 2010, 18:19:51 »
What makes the inbuilt systems better than the handheld ones?

Ive used a TomTom for a few years now and its never stopped working, always got me where i need to go and updates are easy to get, although it does seem  its cheaper sometimes to get the latest complete unit.

I dont have a Navigon but was considering getting one as my tomtom is looking a bit ratty now, all the independant review sites seem to rate them and the map updates are available online, maybe the older units cant be updated?  :question

The Garmin site is just too confusing; how many models do you need?? TomTom seem to bring out a new model every 5 mins as well and the live service fees soon add up!

Ive taken a look at some sat navs for my Blackberry 9700, the Trafficmaster one was rubbish and the Telenav one is ok but likes to send you down tiny country lanes all the time!

Best thing is try a few out and see how they are, some of them do lots of things other than maps! :)

I was the one who posted the rusty insides of the motor  :'(

Its normally quiet obvious if you have a bad one, they are easy to remove after you take the headlamp out, if you see orange around the pins then its time for a new one  :-[

Should be fairly easy to find a used one on here tho.

Yes, it locks into the plastic arm so it can move the light beam up and down depending on the load.

The sensors on the suspension tell the control unit how much to move the motors. Without the ball locked in, the headlamp internals just move freely and you dont get any adjustment.

Use an allen key to make the white adjusters turn. Its quite common for the adjusters inside the light to be broken, hopefully yours arent. I think its because the heat makes the plastic brittle and very fragile :(

Oh, and you are right, the servo motors adjust the headlamps up and down depending on load, you have to set the correct "no load" height once you have everything back together else the system assumes will adjust around that point.

the way i know to get it roughly right is to park as close to a wall as possible, turn lights on, mark where the top of the beam is, then pull back a couple of meters then aim the lights about 10cm below the marks you made.

Not perfect but its a start, get them properly aimed if not sure.

If there are no warning codes the system is happy. I have a feeling you havent clipped the servo "ball" onto the light adjuster, what will happen is the lights will just drop down to the lowest possible setting.

Easiest way to check is to take the lamp out, take the cover off the HID bulb and remove the bulb (being careful as its high voltage), then putting the servo back in and checking theres no movement from the HID bulb area once its attached.

You can then set the lights up using the adjusters on the front on the lights, inner one does up and down if i remember.

hope that helps!

Is the connector under the parcel shelf somewhere?

Mine does the same, for what its worth. I assume its because the aerial is in the back window / the heating element and aerial are one and the same!

Will be interesting if theres a (cheap) fix!  ;)

when Kevin had his Tech2 attached it was noted that the alarm and powersounder were both registered as open circuit.

I think they must have been disconnected by the previous owner as the key fob didnt work so every time he unlocked the door with the key, off goes the alarm!  >:(

I took a peek under the scuttle to see if it was obvious if the connectors were pulled off, i could only see one and it looked like it was on, so is there a fuse or other breaker that could have been removed to shut them up?

I cant imagine both are faulty, im not that worried about having the alarm, just like to have things working if they are on the car!   :)

Cheers

Mine all lights up, its very dim though, you can only see it when its properly dark outside.

I think the trouble is you cant really do Bose removal in stages can you? Suppose i could buy a few bits a month, although do install companies like you to have your own parts? I would think they would shy away from that as im sure they wouldnt want to guarentee someone elses purchase, even if new.

Are we looking at a days work for a pro job Dave? Roughly what sort of numbers for an install cost? I appreciate you do it as a living so if thats sensitive info thats fine.

Would it be worth mounting replacement subs where the Bose ones are or can door speakers offer the same amount of bass these days?

Sorry for all the questions, have to be able to justify it to my better half!  ;D ::) :-[

Are we talking £500 inc installation for speakers, headunit etc or more though?

Cos thats the thing, it would have to be a LOT better to justify £500, especially in a car environment which isnt known for good accoustics  :D :P

Im just thinking (as you do) about upgrading the CCR 2006/Bose in my Elite but what sort of budget would be needed to make a ~noticable~ difference?

To be honest, i cant knock the factory system, very nice separation and clarity, good tight bass and plenty of volume, and of course its all integrated nicely.

I know its a complete speaker/head unit change, plus wiring too id imagine, the good news i would think is you could mount an amp where the bose one is, i wouldnt want a boot full of sub either, something nice and stealthy!

Am mainly thinking of the swap as i had a Blaupunkt MP68 in my old Mondeo which had bluetooth phone and mp3/usb connections, would be nice to have those features :)

Any suggestions?

Cheers!

I think i'll keep my factory bose system  ;) Would be nice to have a modern mp3/usb head unit but i think it would be a serious pain to change everything (especially reading your post!) and the bose system does sound very good, ive been quite impressed with it.
